A Knock On The Door |

When 79-year-old Charles Wilson stopped at the Carolina Inn and Suites in Spartanburg, South Carolina in February 2006, he was expecting to have a quiet stay. Instead, when he opened the door of his hotel room he was confronted with what police say was a terrifying vision: Christopher Bennett holding a hammer.
According to police, Charles had met Bennett in the hotel earlier, so he allowed him access to the room. Charles turned his back to finish getting dressed, and later told police that Bennett was muttering something that he wasn't able to understand.
The next moment, Bennett allegedly attacked Charles, striking him in the head with his hammer. When Charles regained consciousness, he says Bennett was standing over him, still holding the hammer.
Cops say that at this time, Bennett threatened to kill Charles. But then, according to police, Bennett was scared off by a loud noise outside the room and he ran, making off with some medication, about $100 in cash, and a cell phone. |

When the cops were contacted and arrived at the hotel, Charles was able to identify his alleged assailant, thanks to their previous meeting. Police immediately issued a warrant for the arrest of Bennett and tried to find him, but it appeared that they were too late. Bennett was nowhere to be found. That's until June, 2007, when Poole was arrested and Bennett soon followed. |
