Mistaken Identity Nearly Costs A Man His Life |
|
| |
Detroit federal agencies are searching for Lamont Paris. They say in less than 30 years of life, the young man has left a trail of death and violence in his wake.
On April 22nd, 2005, a federal postal worker was leaving his job in the wee hours of the morning. It was his regular routine. As he left the post office at around 2 am, shots rang out and the postman was struck twice in the neck. Two men, who the postal worker didn't know, ran from the scene. Police say that one of the shooters was Lamont Paris.
Federal agents believe that the postman was mistakenly identified. The victim has the same name as the cousin of a drug lord who rivaled an organization that investigators say Lamont Paris was working for.
The postman survived, but not everyone has been so lucky.
The Drug Enforcement Agency and the Internal Revenue Service agents are searching for Paris as part of a bigger, 31-count drug and money laundering indictment around the dismantling of the Lewis Drug Organization in the Motor City. In addition to the drug and money laundering charges, cops say Paris killed at least two men at the behest of the leader of the organization, Quasand Lewis. In April 2006, Quasand Lewis pled guilty to charges of narcotics trafficking and money laundering. |

Shootout In Front Of Police Headquarters |
|
| |
As the alleged Lewis hitman, investigators say Paris was usually dispatched to take care of rival drug dealers. They say that is just what happened on April 12th, 2003. Agents say Paris and an accomplice found out that alleged rival Tommy Hodges was headed to a Greektown nightclub. The club is right across the street from Detroit Police Headquarters. But, cops say that didn't slow down the brazen drug traffickers. Federal police say Paris followed Hodges to the bar and waited to make his move.
Agents say Hodges parked his Mercedes just outside of the club and across the street from the police station. Before Hodges and his wife could get out, cops say Paris pulled up and opened fire with automatic weapons. Federal investigators say Hodges returned fire while driving off. Surprisingly, none of the four people involved were shot. But, Paris and his accomplice were taken into police custody that same night.
Detroit police were forced to release the pair over complications with their warrants. Paris took off and was a fugitive by the time the Detroit Police Department charged him with Hodges' attempted murder.
Hodges is no prize himself: In 2005, he pled guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering and is currently serving a twenty-year sentence. |

Violent Crimes Continue |
|
| |
Cops say Paris may have been on the run, but he wasn't scared straight. They say he continued to be a part of the Detroit drug scene and act as an enforcer.
In June 2004, police believe Paris shot and killed Armond Hickmon in retaliation for the shooting death of Paris' brother.
Paris is also wanted for questioning in the December 2004 murder of Hashim Williams, a man police say stole a million dollars in drug money from the Lewis organization in November of 2004. Two other men who had been with Williams were also found murdered, though Paris has not been charged in any of those crimes.
On the Run
Lamont Paris is allegedly a member of the "Connecticut Boys," a murder-for-hire organization that is based in Highland Park, Michigan. Aside from his connections to the Detroit area, cops think Paris also has ties to Atlanta.
Authorities say there's one thing Paris can't hide: Paris was shot in the hand and refused to go to the hospital. As a result, police say his right hand remains paralyzed.
Investigators don't think they're the only ones after Lamont Paris. They say that Paris stole $2 million from a drug gang and is likely to be targeted by men just like himself if the cops don't find him first. |
