Case Story |

Normal Day In The Neighborhood |
|
| |
In the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, basketball is a rite of passage, and it all starts on the court. Several pro basketball players got their start in that very neighborhood -- and summer is the time all of the "ballers" like to get out and show their stuff.
August 13, 2006 was a typical hot, sunny summer day. There was a pick-up basketball tournament organized at the Lafayette playground and 150 people came to watch. It's heavy competition because all of the boys on the court feel as if they have something to prove.
Pleazoure Bonds was one of those boys. He was a respectable young man who loved to play ball. He was different than many of the players, because he was a quiet, shy kind of guy. He didn't trash talk -- he just loved the game.
Off the court, he worked at a grocery store and lived with his mother. He was trying to do the right thing and avoid the lure of the streets -- the same streets that had led many of his friends astray. But in the end, it wasn't the streets that Pleazoure had to worry about, it was the basketball court. |

Murder On The Court |
|
| |
Pleazoure had been outplaying the opposing team all afternoon long. In fact, on many plays, the guy guarding him never had a chance. That guy was a man named Kevin Townsend. Police say he is a known member of ths Bloods "9 Trey" Gang.
On the afternoon of August 13, 2006, Townsend became angry that he was having trouble guarding his opponent -- dangerously angry, police say. According to cops, he asked his coach to substitute him out of the game with three minutes remaining and walked over to the side of the court, where he grabbed a 9mm pistol out of his gym bag.
Police say he then walked right over to Pleazoure and -- at point blank range -- fired one shot into his opponent's shoulder.
That shot ruptured a main artery -- and Pleazoure bled to death right on the basketball court. Police say Townsend simply walked away after the violent encounter. |

Silence From The Crowd |
|
| |
Police believe there were roughly 150 people at the basketball tournament. But amazingly, police tell AMW they are having trouble getting much information out of these witnesses. Police are facing the same problem as they scour this Brooklyn neighborhood for clues to Townsend's whereabouts.
Frustrated detectives are afraid the "code of the street" is hurting their investigation. Police need to talk to anyone who was at the basketball tournament or who knows where Kevin Townsend might be. |
