An Unwelcome Gift |
|
| |
Dagoberto Gamez and his estranged wife, Maria, were in the process of getting a divorce. But Chicago police say that on May 29, 1998, before Maria could sign the papers, Gamez attacked her.
Police say that early that morning, Maria was getting ready for work when Gamez paid her an unexpected visit. Maria told Gamez that she had an important meeting and was in a rush to leave. But as she walked out the door and into her car, police say Gamez ran after her. Authorities believe Gamez yelled to Maria that he had a present to give her. |

Get Out Of My Way! |
|

Police say Gamez stood in front of Maria's car claiming the gift was papers for her to sign. They say Gamez likely pretended these were the divorce papers Maria had been waiting for.
But police say Maria was too afraid to get out of the car, where she sat with her 5-year-old son. The family remembers hearing Gamez and Maria go back and forth, arguing with one another. Maria's family says they could see from their apartment window as Gamez ran to the driver's side of the car.
When the family ran down to help Maria they found the driver's door open but they couldn't find Maria anywhere. As they looked closer into the vehicle they noticed Maria laying across the front seat of her car -- covered in blood. |

Cops Seek Killer |
|
| |
Authorities say Gamez stabbed Maria numerous times in her chest with the "gift" he had brought for her, killing her. Cops confirm Maria also suffered additional stab wounds to both hands when she put them out to block the knife. Their son was a witness to the awful crime.
Police say no one has seen Gamez since he fled from Maria's home that day. |
