  Case Story
Deputy Pulls Over Suspicious Speeding Driver
What began as the routine traffic stop of a speeding driver in Florida has now become one of the largest manhunts in the nation. On Sept. 28, 2006, Polk County, Fla. Deputy Doug Speirs pulled over the driver of a speeding vehicle around 11:45 a.m. Cops say when Deputy Speirs approached the car, the man behind the wheel told him that he didn't have a driver's license, but did have a Fla. identification card. According to authorities, the driver was acting suspicious during the traffic stop, inquiring about whether or not he would be going to jail. Deputy Speirs had a bad feeling about the driver. But it wasn't until the suspect got out of his car and fled into the nearby woods that Deputy Speirs' instincts were confirmed.

  "Shots Fired!"
Deputy Speirs immediately called for assistance on his radio, sending out a call that he was on a foot pursuit with the suspect. Hearing the call on his radio, Deputy Matthew Williams responded to the scene. But realizing the woods were thick and dangerous, the deputies first set up a perimeter around the area. Then, the deputies and Deputy Williams' police dog, "Diogi," started into the woods to search out the suspect. According to authorities, the deputies and dog were ambushed as soon as they stepped into the woods by a barrage of gunfire. Deputy Speirs was shot in the leg, but was able to call in for an ambulance and additional backup. Deputy Williams and his dog, however, were killed in the gunfire. Through their investigation, police say they discovered the driver was a Miami, Fla. man named Eswardo O. Ramclaim. Cops say Ramclaim's vehicle was actually a rental car he picked up one week earlier in Miami. Authorities are hunting Ramclaim relentlessly and are vowing not to rest until the man suspected of killing two of their own and injuring another is brought to justice.
