  Case Story
Serial Rapist Loose In Washington D.C. Area
Police from six jurisdictions in the Washington, D.C. area are working together to catch a serial rapist who has been attacking women for the past four years. According to police, DNA has linked six violent rapes to one man -- and at least one other attempted rape in the area fits the rapist's MO. This serial rapist doesn't strike at random, according to cops. Instead, they say he has a specific target -- hotel housekeepers. Now, the serial rapist is causing panic in the D.C. area's hotel industry. Police say out of the six crimes linked to the rapist, five of the victims were hotel housekeepers who were cleaning rooms at the time of their attacks. Police say although the frequency of the rapes diminished in 2004, a recent attempted rape case in 2006 that appears to have been carried out by the same man has authorities fearing the serial rapist is at it again.

DNA Links Rapes To One Man
On December 1, 2002, police responded to a rape call at a hotel in Silver Spring, Md. When they arrived, cops learned the victim was a housekeeper at the hotel -- and that she'd been violently raped by a stranger who entered a hotel room she was cleaning at the time. According to police, the rapist used a box cutter to threaten the housekeeper before he physically and sexually assaulted her. Police got a break when they discovered the suspect had left the box cutter behind. Police say the weapon had the name "Debbie" hand-written on the handle and could belong to someone the suspect knows who labels their belongings. Another clue left behind at the crime scene was a black beret-style hat. Police hoped someone would recognize the box cutter or cap and turn in the rapist. Through DNA, police were able to determine the rapist had struck once before in May 2002. But the method of attack in that case was completely different than the hotel rape, according to police. Cops say the rapist approached the May 2002 victim in his car as she walked down the street and asked if she needed a ride. When the victim agreed, cops say the suspect drove her to a parking lot and raped her. Police developed a composite sketch of the suspect, based on the victim's description -- but several months passed without any new leads. That was until May 11, 2003, when D.C. Metropolitan Police responded to a rape call at a local hotel. Rape After Rape Just like in the December 2002 case, the rape victim was a housekeeper who was busy cleaning a room when a man came in the room and attacked her. And just like at the last crime scene, one of the suspect's personal belongings was left behind -- this time thanks to the vigilant victim, who tore a ring the suspect was wearing off of his finger. DNA matched this rape to the others, and police began to suspect they had a serial rapist on their hands. Then, just 12 days later, another rape was reported at a different Washington, D.C. hotel. The MO and DNA matched the other attacks, and another composite was released based on the recent victims' descriptions. On June 6, 2003, just fourteen days later, DNA proved once again the serial rapist had no plans to stop his violent attacks. A housekeeper at a hotel in Arlington, Va. was raped and physically assaulted by a man whose behavior and DNA matched those of the other rapes. Three days later, another attack in Md. was linked to the serial rapist. It seemed like the attacks would never stop. But then -- silence. Police say cases they could link to the serial rapist through DNA stopped after June 9, 2003. But recently, police have new cause for concern. On February 6, 2006, police say a man attacked a housekeeper at an Alexandria, Va. hotel and attempted to rape her. Although he was not successful and they did not obtain DNA from the crime scene, police believe it was the same attacker because the MO was exactly the same. Police fear the rapist will begin striking with the same frequency as before and are desperate to catch him before he has the chance to rape any more innocent women.

  Police Ask For Public's Help
Police want the public to keep some of the key clues in the case in mind. In some of the cases, the rapist robbed his victims either jewelry or money, and in many of the rapes, he threatened his victims' lives, or the lives of their families. In each case, the suspect was described as a black man between 25 and 35 years old with a medium build and a dark complexion. Victims describe him as being between 5'7" and 5'11" and weighing 160 to 210 lbs. Most described him as having a medium build, having close-cropped hair and a clean-shaven face. Nearly every victim says the suspect was well-dressed in dress shirts and nice pants at the time of their rapes. According to police, some victims say he had acne scars on his nose and cheeks. In some cases, he spoke with a limited use of the Spanish language. Though the descriptions and composites may vary slightly, cops say one thing is certain: DNA has linked this man to six very violent and vicious rapes and he needs to be brought to justice.
