  Case Story
Former Cop Suspected Behind Six Person Jail Break
In 1989, Francisco Meza-Rojas made a promise ---- to protect and serve his community. But it wasn't just a promise, it was also his job. That's because in 1989, the Texas resident joined the McAllen Police Department. However, investigators tell AMW that it wasn't long before Meza-Rojas broke his promise -- turning his back on the police department and on his community, too. He allegedly put his community and its residents in danger in one of the worst ways possible. Detectives say he became a drug dealer -- infusing local neighborhoods with illegal drugs like marijuana and cocaine. Before long, the tables turned and the former cop found himself behind bars, facing drug charges. However, investigators say Meza-Rojas refused to stay put and devised a vicious plot to defy the law once and for all.

  The Getaway
On Sept. 19, 2006, cops say that Meza-Rojas masterminded a plot to break out of his jail cell. But he didn't go alone. As part of the plan, police say he and five of his cell mates broke out of jail with the help of a homemade shank. Investigators say the fugitives used a piece of plastic -- possibly the handle of a toothbrush -- and carved it into a sharp weapon. That night, around 9:30 p.m. cops say that Meza-Rojas and his cell mates called a prison guard to the cell, threatened the guard with the shank, and then made a run for freedom. Police say the men should be considered armed and dangerous. Forty-one-year-old Francisco Meza-Rojas is 5'9" with brown eyes and brown hair. He weighs 170 pounds and has a scar near his right eyebrow.
