Man Using False Identity Attempts Molestation, Kidnap |

On August 27, 2006, the town of Springfield, Oregon was the scene of two attempted molestations and kidnappings. Police say both crimes were the work of one person, a man using the name "John Griffiths" but who cops have now identified as Jason Seth Albion O'Connell.
Before the assaults on the underage girls, O'Connell had lived in a homeless shelter and had also worked at a gas station in Eugene, Oregon. However, after the attacks, the FBI learned that he wasn't the man he said he was at all...the identity of "John Griffiths" had been stolen.
Authorities say that O'Connell allegedly used a lollipop to entice a 7-year-old girl away from playing in front of her apartment building. He took her behind some bushes and attempted to remove her pants Cops say luckily he was scared off by a passerby.
About 30 minutes later, he tried again...this time approaching two 5-year-old girls playing at a local playground. He grabbed one of the victims and started to abuse her when her friend screamed. A scared O'Connell ran away. Police were able to get surveillance video of the suspect boarding a Lane Transit District bus soon after the second attack.
Police learned that he had been staying at a homeless shelter and was using the name "John Griffiths", however, upon further investigation, they found that the identity was stolen and the Nevada Drivers License issued in June 2006 was a fake.
The FBI says that Jason Seth Albion O'Connell had not been seen in the Springfield or Eugene area since the attacks and has most likely left the state. They believe that he may have worked or may have family and friends in Billings, Montana; Meridian, Idaho; Boise, Idaho; Las Vegas, Nevada; Las Cruces, New Mexico; Island Park, New York; and Santa Rosa, California.
Springfield detectives are also looking into whether he tried to assault another girl after boarding the bus to the Santa Clara, Oregon area. Police believe that he may try to get work at gas stations or convenience stores or as a delivery truck driver. He is also known to wear Hawaiian shirts, drink excessively, and hitchhike with truck drivers.
Additionally, O'Connell is wanted in Santa Cruz, California, for the 1998 sexual assault of a three-year-old girl. A local arrest warrant was issued charging him with sexual assault and a federal arrest warrant was issued charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. |
