Chasing Down A Rumor |
|
| |
Chicago police say it all started with a rumor that a victim named Elijah Coleman had a safe full of money... $10,000 to be exact. They say when Joshua Stanley learned this, he recruited fugitive Cavinaugh Hughes and another man named Dorian Skyles to plan a robbery.
On the night of November 18, 2005, investigators say Stanley, Hughes, and Skyles knocked on Elijah Coleman's door. When Elijah answered, police say Stanley yelled to the others that Elijah had a gun. Hughes allegedly panicked and shot him in the legs. As Elijah lay on the floor bleeding, cops say the robbers searched the house in vain for a safe full of cash. They never found any money.
Before they left, cops say, Stanley suddenly shot Elijah Coleman in the head, killing him. |

The Weakest Link |
|
| |
Cops say Hughes immediately began to worry that Stanley was the weak link. They say Hughes feared Stanley could tie him and Skyles to the robbery and murder. So, police say he and Skyles talked about it, and agreed Stanley would have to be killed to keep him quiet.
Meanwhile, word reached them that Chicago police detectives were on Stanley's trail... Authorities had been showing Stanley's photo around and looking for him. Skyles later told police that he got the same gun used to murder Coleman and gave the gun to Hughes. Police say Hughes set a trap for Stanley by picking him up in a car and driving him to an area around 93rd and South Avalon Avenue in Chicago. When they both got out of the car police say Hughes shot Stanley then ran off on foot. |

Who's Seen Hughes? |
|
| |
Now, two people are dead because of the botched robbery. Police say this gave them even more momentum to solve the case.
When police went to look for Hughes the next day they say Hughes told a friend he was leaving town. Detectives later learned Hughes bought a Greyhound Bus ticket to Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Skyles, however, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder... and Hughes hasn't been seen since. |
