Vodka, Insults And A Fistfight |
|
| |
Samarkand, Uzbekistan is a long way from the northside of Chicago... but cops say it was the tie that connected a murder suspect with his victim.
On Memorial Day weekend in 2005, a group of men from Uzbekistan were having a party in a Chicago apartment on West Arthur Road. Police say they were drinking a lot of vodka. Witnesses say two of the men began arguing. First, it was all about their mothers, then the argument turned more serious and it was over money owed from a construction job. Sukhrob Davronov was heard calling the victim Odiljon Istamov names. Party-goers say the worst of it was Davronov calling him a "chameleon" which is a particularly harsh insult in Uzbekistan. The host of the party kicked most of the people out and Davronov left with them. Witnesses believe Odiljon left about a half an hour later.
When Odiljon got outside, witnesses say Davronov was there waiting for him... |

A Fight To The Death |

Cops say Odiljon left the apartment to buy a calling card to phone his family. But once once outside, police say he was met with an angry and drunk Davronov.
Witnesses claim Davronov and Odiljon started arguing again. This time, cops say the argument escalated to a fistfight. Their friends tried hard to pull them apart to stop the fight. But when they looked down at their hands there was blood all over them. Odiljon had been severely injured.
The frightened group took Odiljon upstairs to the apartment. They ripped his shirt off to find out where the blood was coming from. That's when they realized Odiljon had been stabbed. His friends called 911, and the police and paramedics arrived. Tragically, Odiljon Istamov died at the hospital. |

Davronov Makes Tracks |

The witnesses were brought into the Area 3 detective division, but no one spoke English. The detectives brought in a fellow officer who spoke Russian, and he was able to get eyewitness accounts of what happened... identifying Davronov as the suspect. But cops say Davronov had already left town.
Investigators say they have no evidence he left the country by airplane, but could have slipped across the Canadian border by car and headed home from there to Uzbekistan. Cops say his hometown of Samarkand, Uzbekistan could be as hot for him as Chicago. His alleged victim, Okiljon Istamov, grew up in the same town. |
