A Thin Line Between Love And Hate |
|
| |
In 2000, Victor Mercado and his girlfriend, Melissa, met in Florida and seemingly fell in love. For six years their relationship grew. During that time, the couple moved to Kentucky and Melissa gave birth to a daughter. Mercado even introduced Melissa to his family in Jamaica.
But investigators say the relationship was rocky. U.S. Marshals say Mercado and Melissa would argue and get into screaming matches with one another. Melissa says Mercado hit her on several occasions. Then, cops say Mercado began selling drugs. Melissa claims, time after time, she rented apartments for him in Louisville under her name because Mercado did not have a job that he could report on paper.
Melissa had finally had enough of Mercado and his lifestyle. She says she was so fed up with Mercado's ways that she eventually began dating another man... a decision that almost cost Melissa her life. |

A Way Of Life That Cannot Be Ignored |
|
| |
Police say Mercado was a big time drug dealer that distributed marijuana from Jamaica to Florida. They say he would move large quantities using sources in Arizona, Washington DC, and Texas. Authorities believe Mercado couldn't stay in one place very long for fear of getting caught. They say he has many girlfriends and uses each of them to rent houses and apartments.
In August 2005, Melissa gave up on her dream of Mercado quitting his lucrative business and eventually met someone else. When Mercado found out about her new guy, investigators say he was angry that she was bringing this man around their daughter.
On the 10th of August, cops say Mercado came to Melissa's home in Louisville and began questioning what she was doing with this other man. The argument started in the inside of the house then moved outside. Marshals say that their two-year-old daughter and Melissa's family all witnessed as the fight escalated.
Police say Mercado pulled a gun from his waist and began shooting at Melissa, aiming at her head. Luckily, Melissa ducked and narrowly saved her life. But a few shots, cops say, pierced her arm and she fainted. Then, they believe Mercado ran from the scene and never looked back. |

More Women = More Victims |
|
| |
Kentucky police say after Melissa reported the incident another woman came forward with information. The woman says she dated Mercado in 2001 for eight months. She says they met at a club and Mercado was dressed to impress. She told police that Mercado likes to shop at the finest boutiques in Miami. She says he sometimes likes to wear one left pant leg up to his knee, because Mercado claims it is a "gangster look."
The woman also says Mercado has a terrible temper. She told investigators that he once beat her up in a club because he saw her with someone else. She said she was so scared of Mercado that she wasn't able to go to police.
Police say Mercado is likely befriending other women to carry out his business. They hope one of his new girlfriends will come forward with clues to his current whereabouts.
Authorities say Mercado is a native Jamaican who speaks with a heavy accent. They say he is probably traveling to Jamaica to pick up more marijuana.
Cops think Mercado's fashion choices might do him in. Remember: one former girlfriend told police he likes to have one pant leg rolled up. Police also say Mercado likes to dress in layers. They say he will wear two shirts and two pants to hide his small frame. |
