  Case Story
  Charges Dropped Against Karr
On December 26, 1996, 6-year-old beauty pageant princess JonBenet Ramsey was found dead in the basement of her family's home in Boulder, Colo. Cops say she had been brutally beaten, strangled to death with a nylon cord and then covered with a white blanket. A decade later, her murder is still a full-fledged mystery and the subject of vivid speculation. On August 17, 2006, John Mark Karr, a former teacher from Georgia was arrested in Bangkok. He promptly informed Thai authorities that he had been with Jon Benet when she was killed, but called the girl's death an accident. When asked by reporters if he was innocent of the crime, Karr said: "No." However, after extradition back to the US, Karr's DNA did not show a match and  Karr's attorney confirmed that the charges against him  have been dropped in the Ramsey case, but he still faces child pornography charges in California.

A Decade -- And Still No Answers
Despite intense publicity and constant speculation in the media for more than a decade, Karr was the first person ever charged in connection with the 1996 JonBenet murder. For much of the decade following her murder, JonBenet's own parents -- John and Patsy Ramsey -- were often mentioned in media accounts as possible suspects in her murder. In 1999, a grand jury investigation focused on John and Patsy Ramsey, but produced no charges. Similarly, a 2003 lawsuit against the Ramseys was also dismissed by a federal judge. The Boulder County District Attorney's Office concurred with the judge's opinion the following month, saying there was no solid evidence against the couple. After the murder the Ramseys left Colorado and lived in both in Michigan and in Atlanta, Georgia. Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer in June of 2006.
