One Bad Day After Another |
|
| |
On May 7, 2005, Ronnie Wright and William Ray Johnson were hanging out at an Elkhart Indiana bar called Linda's Hideaway after work. Wright had a terrible week and William was there to comfort him. The two had been friends since they were in diapers and Wright even lived with William's family as a teenager. William says it was only natural to stand by Wright when he had just lost his job, his Harley Davidson motorcycle was repossessed, and his wife decided to leave him. But cops say Wright had reached the point where not even a lifelong friend could prevent his uncontrolled anger that day.
By 2 p.m. that afternoon Wright and William had been drinking for several hours when suddenly an argument broke out at the bar. Witnesses say Wright began yelling at another patron about a hot dog. His friend William urged Wright to leave the bar and calm down.
But cops say Wright just got angrier. After walking outside Wright flashed a knife through the window. William later recognized the knife as a present he had given Wright last Christmas. |

The Point of No Return |
|
| |
William says he ran outside to plead with Wright to control himself. But he said Wright was so convinced that he hadn't backed him up during the argument that he became enraged.
Cops say Wright began stabbing William. He was punctured in his lung, backside, arms, hands, and his kidneys. There were 19 wounds in all. Police believe 8 of the wounds would have been fatal if the knife had only been ¼ of an inch longer. Police say Wright ran from the scene. He was spotted weeks later in Florida, but then disappeared again. |

A Life Permanently Damaged |
|
| |
William says he is still recovering from his wounds but he has nerve damage in his hands, arms, and legs and now has to walk with cane. He fears he will never be able to work again.
His loved ones say this near death experience has scarred William not just physically but emotionally. He struggles every day knowing that his best friend allegedly tried to kill him. |
