Search In Tennessee For Cop Killer |
|
| |
A massive search for Clifford Leon Houston -- one of the suspects accused of killing a Roane County, Tenn. sheriff's deputy and his friend -- has failed to turn up new leads on the alleged murderer's wherabouts. Although police say they are being assisted by every county, city, and federal agency around them, Houston, who goes by his middle name "Leon," remains on the run.
Houston's run from the law began on May 11, 2006 at around 5:45 p.m. That's when cops say he and his brother, Rocky, opened fire on Deputy Bill Jones and his close friend and former officer Mike Brown, killing both of them. According to police, the attack took place in front of a house and property that belonged to the Houston brothers' grandfather. Police do not know if the brothers were living there at the time of the shooting. Police say both Leon and Rocky had outstanding warrants, and were already wanted on charges including reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, and threats against forest service officials who were reportedly on their property to put out a fire.
Shortly after the attack, cops say the brothers' uncle picked them up in his car, and drove Rocky to the hospital -- because he'd been wounded in the gunfire during the shootout. Police had put out an alert to all hospitals, believing one or both of the brothers had been injured in the shootout. When police received a call that Rocky Houston was at Oak Ridge Medical Center, they immediately moved in. He is now in custody at the hospital after undergoing surgery for his wounds and has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
According to cops, the Houston brothers' uncle dropped Leon off at an unknown location after taking Rocky to the hospital. Leon hasn't been seen since. Cops fear finding Leon won't be easy because he is a "survivalist," known to be able to stay alive in the woods and rural areas of Roane County with very few material possessions. |

A Tragic Year In Roane County |
|
| |
Deputy Brown's murder comes at a difficult time for law enforcement in Roane County -- less than a year after a prison official with the county was gunned down, allegedly by Jennifer Hyatte during an attempt to break her husband, George, out of prison. To a community still struggling to understand the murder of their loved law enforcement officer, the news of Deputy Brown's murder comes as a shock and deepens a wound that hasn't completely healed.
Jennifer and George Hyatte are now in custody, and police in Roane County are hoping to serve the same justice in Deputy Brown's case by capturing Leon Houston. |
