  Case Story
  Robbery Caught On Tape
When two men walked into a jewelry store in Freehold, New Jersey on August 26, 2005, their intentions weren't initially made clear. As one of the men began a conversation with a sales associate, apparently about some watches in a case, he started to make a telephone call. The other man walked past him, bumping him on the shoulder. Cops say that was the signal -- to take out their guns and make it known that they were there to rob the place. Cops say the two men were then joined by two others who were toting duffel bags. The four men then proceeded to rob the jewelry store, ordering the sales people to open various cases of jewelry and shoving the goods in their bags. To cover his bases, the first man to enter the store demanded the tape from the security cameras. When the sales person showed him there wasn't a tape in the machine, the robber was satisfied, and the four men left. Cops say that's when things started to go downhill for the four men -- because the store's state-of-the-art security system was actually recording their every move on computer hard drives instead of video tapes.

  Cops ID The Philly Crew
After reviewing the recorded images, cops knew it was only a matter of time before they would identify the four jewelry store robbers -- they had made vital mistakes during their robbery. One of the men, for example, had a noticeable limp -- while two others wore Philadelphia, Pa. sports paraphernalia. Cops deduced that they were likely looking for a crew from Philadelphia who had a member with a limp. Detectives in New Jersey sent the video images to the FBI in Philadelphia -- and sure enough, one of the agents recognized the thug with the limp as a man named Robert Ward. To be sure, the agent told cops about a tattoo Ward had on his right forearm. When cops reviewed the video of the limping robber, they saw the tattoo and knew it was Ward. Through Ward, cops were able to identify two of the other men -- Eric Lane, and the gang's alleged ringleader, Marion Pegeses. While investigators hit the streets of Philadelphia, searching for Pegeses and company, cops say the crew was out of town working on another job in New Hartford, New York. On February 27, 2006, a 9-1-1 call came in from a jewelry store in the area -- someone was robbing the store. Officer Joseph Corr responded to the call, and arrived at the crime scene in time to see two cars tear out of the parking lot. Officer Corr gave chase to one of the cars -- and the pursuit soon became dangerous as they reached speeds of more than 100 miles-per-hour. The suspects refused to give up. When the robbers' getaway car slammed into a gas pump, they fled on foot. Officer Corr followed, and paid with his life.

  A Fallen Officer
Cops say when Officer Corr caught up to the remaining suspect, he was shot in the throat and was instantly killed. The beloved officer's murder sparked a massive manhunt for the people responsible, and it didn't take long to figure out the gunman's identity -- Walter Richardson. That's because cops say the getaway car that crashed into the gas pump was registered to the Richardson's mother. Investigators tracked down Richardson to his hideout in Philadelphia, and the cornered accused cop-killer came out firing at the officers. He was killed in the gunfire. When the smoke cleared, police learned that Richardson was a member of Pegeses' crew, and that Pegeses himself, along with Ward from the New Jersey jewelry store robbery surveillance video, were in the second getaway car. Cops caught up with Ward just a few weeks later -- and rounded up most of the other suspects too. But Pegeses is still on the run and hasn't been seen since the day of the New Hartford jewelry heist.
