A Series Of Tricky Getaways |
|
| |
DNA tests are routinely given out to inmates when they enter the prison system. Its a way of tracking them to crimes in the past. But there was nothing routine about the results that came back from a test given to Gary Parham, who was serving time for a gun possession charge. Authorities were shocked to find his DNA all over the crime scene of an unsolved brutal murder that happened seven years prior.
In 1998, Theodora Cooper, a woman who lived in Landover, Md., was found dead in her apartment. Theodora's boyfriend came to see her, after not hearing from her all day. When he walked in, he discovered her lifeless body. She had been stabbed at least 30 times. After thoroughly investigating, no suspects came onto their radar and cops were forced to consider it a cold case.
But then, Parham's DNA test results linked him to the crime scene and cops ordered an additional blood test to confirm the results.
Sure enough, the results linked Parham again to the crime. But when they went to charge the inmate for the murder, he wasn't in prison. Parham had been released less than a week earlier.

Mix Up And A Tip Off |
|
| |
Cops knew another way of arresting Parham. As part of his release, he had to keep regular appointments with a parole offiicer. Parham had been good at attending so far, so cops were ready to catch him at the next meeting. In a bizarre coincidence, authorities arrested his brother after he had been wrongly identified as Gary. After his identity had been confirmed and he was released, cops say Gary's brother called him and tipped him off, which sent the fugitive running again.
In a brazen move, Parham even called the detective who was looking for him and told him that he'd have to work hard to catch him.

Still On The Run |
|
| |
Parham must not have learned his lesson in jail because less than a month after his release, cops say he was committing crimes.
After being invited to a party in Montgomery County, Md., Parham allegedly sexually assaulted two women who lived there. Authorities also say that he stole property from them.
Now, Parham is thought to be some where in Fayetteville, N.C., where his family lives. |
