New Hope For A Deserving Patient |
|
| |
Police are searching for LeaAnn Howard because they say she helped her boyfriend, Byron Perkins, bolt from a Louisville-area jail. Perkins had been tentatively released for medical reasons -- he was only able to get out to donate a kidney to his dying son. But instead of heading to the hospital, Marshals say the couple hit the road.
This isn't the first time authorities say LeaAnn Howard has gotten into trouble with her bad news boyfriend. They say the fugitive couple was already in trouble with the law for home invasion robberies when the pair fled. Marshals say the heartless duo used Perkins' son, Destin, and his ailing health as a ploy to spring Perkins from the big house.
After a long and painful few months spent dealing with his father's betrayal, new hope finally came to Destin in the form of a donated kidney. Late in August 2006, Destin and his family were informed that a matching kidney was available and being transported from San Diego to Louisville. Destin got the implant as soon as possible and his body accepted the kidney. He was treated at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville Kentucky and is doing well. |

Dying Son = Ticket To Paradise? |
|
| |
It all started when Perkins was in jail awaiting sentencing in a federal court for a drug dealing conviction. He solicited a judge for a provisional release... and he played a sympathy card that no one could ever imagine he would pull out. Especially not his son Destin.
But in January 2006, Destin needed a kidney transplant, and was getting dialysis twice a week. Perkins' ex-wife, Destin's mother Angie, gave one of her kidneys to her son. Unfortunately his body rejected it.
Perkins seemed to have the best intentions and asked the judge if he could go see the doctors for initial tests to see if his kidney was compatible with his son. The judge granted the request and Perkins passed the tests with flying colors. He returned to jail, but not before Destin got a much-needed sliver of hope.
Then, on January 24th of 2006, Byron Perkins was scheduled for his final rounds of tests. The next step after that was to give Destin his kidney. Everyone was thinking very optimistically and assumed that everything would go off without a hitch.
Everyone, that is, except for LeaAnn Howard and Byron Perkins. Cops say they saw his son's pain and suffering as their ticket to freedom. So, when the judge again allowed him to go for testing, Perkins got out and Howard picked him up. But, cops say, he never showed up at the hospital for his appointments.
Instead, cops say he and girlfriend LeaAnn Howard bolted. Howard is also no stranger to law enforcement. She was out on bond for the robbery and felony firearms charges when cops say she picked her man up at the jail and fled.
Aside from the charges she's currently facing, Howard pled guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in 2002. Kentucky State Police set up a trap for Howard, which she took hook, line and sinker. She was caught on video tape paying a state trooper thousands of dollars to kill her estranged husband. Because of the plea agreement, Howard spent only a minimal amount of time in jail and then spent the rest of her time under house arrest.
According to Marshals, after Howard picked up Perkins, they went to Perkins' mother's home before fleeing. They say that Byron Perkins left a note for his mother implying that he would be available when Destin needed his kidney. Deputies say he also wrote to his mother that she shouldn't worry about the bond money she put up for him, that Perkins would get the money back to her. Cops say it is all a farce, and Perkins and Howard have no intention of looking out for their families whom they've left in a lurch -- especially Destin, who they left clinging to life.
Police say Howard borrowed a car and money from her mother and she and Perkins bolted together. The car has not been recovered and has been reported stolen. |

Suspects Spotted South Of Border |
|
| |
Following national media coverage, US Marshals confirmed a late February 2006 sighting in a small fishing village outside of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Then, in early April, the Marshals began working with the United States Diplomatic Security Service in Belize after a promising lead came in tracking the fugitive couple to the Central American nation. Despite extensive work by the DSS and the local Belizian authorities, none of the multiple sightings have been confirmed.
Investigators believe Perkins and Howard are probably still in Mexico, scrambling to make ends meet. Marshals say they could be hitchhiking through the country and victimizing innocent civilians along the way.
Howard might be working unskilled day labor jobs. Perkins, meanwhile, has been hanging out at bars, getting into fights...and losing them.
