Case Story |

Dog Cages |
|
| |
Life in prison is not easy. It is not supposed to be. But a program at the Lansing Correctional Facility in Kansas tried to change that and change the inmates.
The Safe Harbor Prison Dogs program matched inmates with rescue dogs. In the program, inmates were put in charge of training the sometimes abused animals so they are adoptable.
John Manard, a convicted murderer, was involved in the program. In a feature article in the Wichita Eagle, Manard said, "We like the ones people give up on. I like taking them and fixing them. If you can harness their aggressiveness, you can save their lives."
In his work with SHPD, Manard met the president of the program, 48-year-old Toby Young. |

A Dog Of An Escape |
|
| |
Apparently the relationship between Manard and Young grew. Cops do not know whether the relationship became romantic but on Sunday, February 12, 2006, cops say the married woman showed just how much she cared for Manard.
Cops say Manard crammed his 6'2", 190-pound frame into a dog carrier. That carrier was then loaded into a SHPD van and cops say, Young simply drove away. Two days later, on February 14, cops tracked down the van, stashed in a storage unit in Bonner Springs, Kansas, about 10 miles from the prison. Cops learned that Young had rented the storage space. But Young and Manard were not there and haven't been seen since.
The latest information says the two may have purchased hair coloring and razors so they could look much different than the pictures. Also, a witness says Young may have been seen in a blue Chevrolet SUV in the week leading up to the escape. |

"It Wasn't Supposed To Go Down That Way. It Was An Accident." |
|
| |
On June 13, 1996, 17-year-old John Manard and his cohort, Michael Yardley found themselves in the parking lot of a Shawnee Mission strip mall. The goal, they say, was to carjack someone. That someone ended up being 45-year-old Donald England.
England sat in his convertible waiting for his wife to get her hair cut. The two men jumped England and a shot was fired. Though it was never proven who actually fired the shot, both Yardley and Manard were tried and convicted of felony murder and aggravated robbery. In court, Manard told the England family that, "It wasn't supposed to go down that way. It was an accident."
They were sentenced to life. |
