The Arellano-Felix cartel, also known as the Tijuana Cartel, has been responsible for as many as 20 murders and the smuggling of thousands of tons of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine for more than a decade, according to the DEA.
Agents say that for years the family-structured criminal enterprise was led by two brothers, Ramon and Benjamin. Ramon, believed to be the most ruthless member, was eventually killed, while his brother, Benjamin was arrested, leaving the leadership open to two more brothers, Francisco Javier and Eduardo.
Cops say Francisco Javier and Eduardo currently head the notorious cartel. The DEA also believes that the two Arellano-Felix brothers are responsible for the massive, sophisticated drug tunnels that were found in January 2006.
Federal agents report that these tunnels support the cartel's massive Tijuana-based drug trade which is accountable for the majority of border trafficking.
The State Department currently has 5 million dollar rewards out for both men for information leading to their capture. |
