Case Story |

New Life Ends Short, Community Stays Quiet |
|
| |
Dana Haywood was trying to make his community a better place. Cops say that after serving a brief time in jail for cocaine possession, Dana was turning things around. He had just started a basketball league for his New Bedford community that would provide men 17-years-old and up an opportunity to get off the streets. Dana was also working to raise his two young children. But cops say his past might have caught up with him.
On July 4, 2005, a group of 30-40 people gathered in Monte Park to watch the fireworks for the holiday. At about 10:00 p.m., two or three men came up to Dana and shot him several times, using two different guns. Then the men simply disappeared, without anyone indicating where they went.
When cops responded to a call about gunshots, they found Dana lying on the sidewalk on Russell Street. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

No Clues From Witnesses |
|
| |
It's hard to believe that no one is talking considering a big crowd of people was standing by so closely. Out of the thirty to forty people, not one person came forward.
Cops say that it is partly due to the "Stop Snitching" culture that has recently been spreading throughout New Bedford. Dana's murder, along with several others, have remained unsolved because no witnesses have bothered to come forward. |
