Case Story |
|
| |
Five Years With No Clues |
|
| |
With only one year left until graduation from New Bedford High School, Marcus Cruz was just about to start his life. He and his friends were anticipating what it would be like once they became part of the "real world."
But early in the morning on Sept. 9, 2001, the 17-year-old's life was taken away. Marcus was on Chancery Street, in the West End of his hometown, New Bedford, at 2:45 a.m., when shots rang out.
New Bedford P.D. and the Massuchusetts State Police responded to the call about gunfire and found Marcus lying on the sidewalk. The young man had been shot many times. Marcus was taken to St. Luke's Hospital and was soon pronounced dead. |

Senseless Silence |
|
| |
Even more disheartening, no one has come forward with information about who Marcus's killer or killers could be. So far, only one person has admitted to being at the scene of the crime, but officials say that the person claimed that she could not provide any information. His mother has grown more and more frustrated with the lack of cooperation that would put her child's murder behind bars.
The reluctance of witnesses to come forward is a part of the "Stop Snitching" culture that is spreading throughout the New Bedford community. Not much else is known about what happened that night or what may have prompted the violent shoot out - a problem affecting other investigations in the area. Cops say this trend has gone too far and is getting in the way of justice. |
