Case Story |

A Dog Eat Dog World |
|
| |
Late one hot sultry morning in Charlotte, North Carolina, a gun shot rang out. Derrick Thornton lay dead on the floor of the flop house where he had been living in. There were others in the place, but cops say no one heard a thing.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Detective Garry McFadden arrived on the scene and with his team interviewed everyone in and arround the crime scene. He said it was like no other. Half a dozen people were living there, along with 4 pit bulls. Detective McFadden said the trash was piled high, dishes hadn't been touched for weeks maybe months, the carpets stunk, and the dogs roamed the apartment freely. It was so bad, Detective McFadden said, "I threw my shoes out after that investigation."
First, detectives interviewed everyone who was in the apartment. The witnesses told police they had been out walking the pit bulls when the victim was killed. Detectives say they described a six-foot tall hispanic male fleeing the building -- trying to pin the murder on this mysterious male. It sounded far fetched. Detective McFadden's gut was right. Curtis Miller and his flop house friends had been lying. |

Cops: Miller Appears To Have Graduated From Drugs To Murder |
|
| |
Cops soon gathered enough information and evidence that pointed to Miller. However, he was long gone and so were the dogs. Police are uncertain why Derrick was killed, but they know it was after a long drug-induced night.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say Curtis Miller and his family are no strangers to crime. They have been in and out of jail for decades, but Detective McFadden says "Now Miller has graduated from drugs to murder charges. |

Tipster Leads Gang Squad to North Carolina Crip |
|
| |
Cops from the NYPD Gang Unit in Queens ran into an informant on the street that had something on a local tough with a big "C" burned into his arm.
They figured out real quick that the "C" stood for Crips, the violent street gang that got its start in Los Angeles.
What suprised them more was that the dirtbag sporting the brand, Curtis Miller, was also a murderer wanted in North Carolina.
The informant and his girfriend knew Miller. After searching for his profile on the AMW web site, they placed an anonymous call to the AMW Hotline. Then they called the law.
Cops in New York pulled Miller's picture off of the AMW web site. A short stake out of a house in a quiet neigborhood ensued. Once they were sure the guy living there was Miller, they pounced.
Cops in North Carolina had received a few calls over the past two years that more or less confirmed Miller was hiding out somewhere in the five borrows of New York City. But that's a lot of ground to cover.
Miller had lived in Queens until he was about eight or nine. Much of his family that had moved to Florida moved back. So he had a good support structure in and around the big city, which helped him to lay low.
Miller in now in custody in Queens on a murder warrant. The US Marshalls will pick him up next week for an all-expenses paid trip back to North Carolina, where he'll face the charge. |
