Jealousy Leads to Rampage |

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Detectives say it doesn't take much to set off Lawrence "Big Red" Brooks. Case in point, on September 30, 2005, Brooks allegedly confronted his girlfriend about the word on the street that she was cheating on him with another man. Police say the argument quickly turned violent and Brooks reportedly pistol whipped his girlfriend on the head, leaving her in serious condition.
Police say Brooks didn't act alone. According to detectives, "Big Red's" own mother helped hold down the girlfriend so that her son could beat the young woman. But his rage didn't end there. Cops say Brooks hit the streets of Charlotte looking for the man who was allegedly "jumping" his girlfriend.
Brooks couldn't find the man he was looking for, but he put the word on the street that this guy better beware. The next day, Brooks started his day the same way he ended the previous night -- looking for the man who was allegedly having an affair with his girlfriend. He and a buddy of his looked out the window of their car, while an unidentified female drove the vehicle. After hours of searching, Brooks found Walter Blair, the man "Big Red" was furious with. Walter was sitting under a covered porch area with a male friend when Brooks reportedly grabbed him and pointed a gun at him.
Detectives say the assault turned ugly and Brooks' partner in crime was egging him on to shoot Walter. Fortunately for the victim, Brooks' gun mis-fired. Walter tried to grab "Big Red's" gun but after failing, Walter took off through the neighborhood. Brooks reportedly pursued Walter on foot. They jumped fences and ran through backyards until Brooks caught up with Walter at 515 Porter Street.
As Walter tried to flee the back yard, Brooks' shot him in the rear end. This slowed down Walter and Brooks was finally close enough to get a good shot. Police say Brooks shot Walter five times in the buttocks, stomach, and groin. Detectives say after Brooks shot Walter and warned him never to get near his girl again, Brooks fled in a car with his accomplice and female driver. |

Walter Blair suffered serious, almost life-threatening injuries to his lower body. He is recovering from his gunshot wounds. Detectives believe by shooting Walter in the groin and buttocks, Brooks was definitely trying to get his message across to the victim to stay away from his girlfriend.
However, for Walter, the troubling part is that he told police he doesn't even know Brooks' girlfriend or Brooks. Police say Walter may be a case of mistaken identity. Either way the victim is glad to be alive.
Police say Brooks has been in and out of jail most of his life. Since he was born and raised in Charlotte, detectives have reason to believe that "Big Red" is laying low in and around his hometown. Cops say his own family isn't helping out. Brooks' mother has been charged with aiding in the pistol whipping of the girlfriend.
Brooks' rap sheet is lengthy and goes back to his childhood. He has been in and out of jail on charges ranging from drug possession to armed robbery. But now "Big Red" is in big trouble -- facing attempted murder charges this time. Cops say it's just a matter of time before they catch up with him -- again. |
