  Case Story
Respected Journalist Attacked, Left For Dead
David Rosenbaum covered Washington politics and policy for The New York Times for more than 35 years before retiring on New Year's Eve 2005. Less than two weeks later, he was being rushed to the hospital with fatal injuries after police say he was attacked near his home in Washington, D.C. David, 63, was taking a walk after dinner in his Northwest D.C. neighborhood around 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 6, 2006, when police say he was attacked and left for dead. His family told District police that David's wallet had been stolen and that a credit card had been used on January 7 in Southeast Washington. Police say they are seeking two men for questioning, who were seen leaving the area around the time of the attack in a dark-colored car with license plates beginning with "516" from an unknown state.

  A Celebrated Career
David worked as an editor and reporter in the Times' Washington bureau for nearly four decades covering everything from economics to domestic policy. Many journalists, politicians and even strangers are shocked by the news of Rosenbaum's death, as he was an award-winning professional in his field. Family, friends and colleagues say Rosenbaum is a talent that the world of journalism will sorely miss.
