  Case Story
My Story -- By Bert Mayer
Kathy was hit on the street in front of our house while walking to her baby-sitting job a few houses down the street. My wife Liz and I found her lying in the street. She was still alive, but died later that night in the hospital from internal bleeding. The family of 14-year-old Kathy Mayer has been living with the pain of her unsolved murder since 1981, and they are desperate for justice. Kathy was struck by a hit-and-run driver just a few feet from her driveway on Cold Spring Road in Westford, Mass. on Feb. 7, 1981. Kathy was on her way to a neighbor's house to baby-sit and was struck just two doors down from her home. Witnesses say the driver of the car kept driving after he hit the teen. Her parents, who were on their way to a party, discovered Kathy's body as they walked to their car. Although she was still alive when they found her, she died later that night from internal injuries.

  Investigation Is A Family Affair
In 1999 --18 years after the fatal accident-- Kathy's younger brother, Michael Mayer, who was a sergeant with the Westford Police Department near Boston, helped renew interest in his sister's cold case. Although the case was never officially closed, police had had little to go on in the nearly two decades after Kathy's death. Once the case was re-examined in 1999, some new information came to light from neighbors and witnesses including an unreleased description of the vehicle and reports that a vehicle stopped near the accident and a man got out to check the passenger side. But the re-interviewed witnesses also said that the driver got back in the car and sped off. According to Michael, the car that struck Kathy was probably not traveling more than 30 mph, thus there were no skid marks or the sound of screeching tires. Yet despite Michael's efforts, the identity of Kathy's murderer remains unknown. Mike was leading the investigation. His efforts ran into roadblocks, and the case remains unsolved. As a result, the person responsible for his sister Kathy's death is still out there.

Still No Answers After A Quarter-Century
Although the Mayer family and Massachusetts police have not been able to close Kathy's case, they say they will never give up. They hope that even after all these years, someone will want to come forth to clear their conscience.   Had the driver of the vehicle stopped and rendered assistance, Kathy may still be alive today. However, the driver left the scene and let her bleed to death...I and my family would be grateful if you would put this case on America's Most Wanted. We are looking forward to hearing from you and will help in any way we can.
