  Case Story
Jewelry Stores Missing Gems in Highway Robbery
When the sales clerk at Filene's, in Boston, went to work on Dec. 1, 2005, she didn't know that it would be a day to remember for years to come. And when she started to show two men some displayed merchandise, she had no idea that the pair were out to rob the store. According to authorities, one man asked to see a piece from the display case. When the clerk was distracted with answering a question, the other man swiped a $17,000 necklace. The men exited the store, leaving the clerk to piece it all together moments later.   Cops say the duo hit the road with the stolen merchandise, and haven't looked back.

  A Second Score
Police in Guilderland, NY., think the pair is also responsible for another heist, four days later, at a jewelry store in their town. Guilderland is about 175 miles from the first store, less than a day's drive.  But this time only one man walked in to the store and asked to see two diamond rings. Once the clerk had handed them over,  the thief ran out the store with the jewelry. The sales clerks chased after them, but the man got away. A red Jeep Cherokee was waiting for him outside, according to police and the two men drove off. Later the vehicle, which was reported stolen in another area, was found abandoned at the Crossgates Mall.

  Out of Towners
Police suspect that the two men aren't locals and believe they are from Boston. About an hour before the hit in Guilderland, they asked for directions to the store at a Mobil gas station. Security personnel at Filene's in Boston identified the men on the surveillance tape at the gas station as the same that had hit their store, officials say.   With $62,000 total in stolen items, cops and sales clerks alike are chasing after these brazen bandits.
