  Case Story
Son Beaten And Shot, Left To Die In Street
Early in the morning on Sept. 15, 2002, Calvin Carter was on his bike, traveling from one grandmother's house to the next. Although his mother, Cheryl, isn't sure why he was up so early, she says that she and Calvin had made the eight-block walk together many times before. But this time, Calvin didn't make it. Calvin lived for 16 short years. I'll never see my son grow up to be a man. Calvin wasn't perfect, I know that. He was a loving, caring, quiet jokester. He made you laugh all the time. Calvin never seemed to have a care in the world.  According to offcials, police responded to a call on Kosciuszko Avenue in Cleveland, Oh., at around 4:30 a.m. A young man had been shot and was lying in the street. The report states that witnesses heard at least two shots fired, and an unidentidied man was seen kneeling over the victim's body, removing something from his pockets. Then, the man got on a bike and rode away.

  A Mother's Tragedy
Calvin had been shot in the head and was transported to nearby Huron Hospital. Since he had no identification on him, he was registered as John Doe. Police then set out to determine who this young man was and took a photo of Calvin back to the area where he was found to question the neighborhood residents. Finally, a neighbor led cops to Calvin's grandmother's house and Calvin was later identified by his aunt and his father. At the hospital, he was still alive, but just barely.   I realized that this child lying there so still before me, that he was gone. Somehow, I wouldn't believe or think he was gone. To see your own baby lying there like that is something a mother will always remember and will remain with me forever.  Then, Calvin's family had to make the heartbreaking decision to remove his life support.

  Still No Answers
I miss each and everything about him, his words, his laughter, his ways, his smile, his jokes, his laziness and his presence. Calvin was only 16-years-old and now, three years later, there are still no arrests in this case. It's possible that one of the witnesses saw more than they admitted but they are afraid to speak out. All Cheryl wants is closure and for her son's killer to be brought to justice.
