Case Story |

Making Great Strides |
|
| |
Because of Leon's unjust and untimely death I am asking for your assistance. The person who killed Leon has changed my life drastically and unknowingly.
Leon Reese, 35, was a student at Laney College in Oakland, Calif. with aspirations of being a journalist. He wrote several stories for his school newspaper, The Laney Tower, aimed at helping the community. In order to pay for his education, Leon worked as an administrative assistant for an Oakland investment company. The staff members who worked with Leon remembered him as hard worker and a good student. One said Leon was the nicest and warmest person that he had ever met. |

Not Just Another Victim of the Streets |
|
| |
Leon once wrote a news article that centered on drug use and the control it had on his community. He explained, " self-pity, a human quality that promotes drug use," was the cause of the illegal activity that surrounded his everyday life. Yet, despite Leon's effort to prevent crime in his neighborhood he eventually fell victim to it.
I had just spent the summer with Leon only a few months before his death. He never gave any indication that he had any problems at home.
As a student struggling to pay the bills Leon made a decision that was unlike anything he had ever done before. On the night of Oct. 1, 2003 Leon secretly chose to earn extra money by selling narcotics. His decision shocked many of his family and friends, because Leon had never been known to do anything illegal. |

A Deadly Mistake |
|
| |
Investigators say Leon met with an unknown buyer at his apartment complex on the 1800 block of Seventh Avenue in Oakland, Calif. Around 9:53 p.m. an argument errupted between the two which provoked the suspect to pull out a gun. According to police, Leon was chased to a stairwell near the courtyard and fell to the ground.
Leon begged the man for his life, but the suspect ignored his pleas. Detectives say Leon was shot twice in the chest and left to die in a pool of blood. Unfortunately for Leon and those close to him, the suspect ran off without a trace. His assailant never gave him the chance to make up for the mistake he made that night, which cost him his life.
It has been years since Leon's death and I have not heard anything new from the police. My patience is growing less each day. All I hope is for justice to prevail so that my brother's soul will be at rest. |
