Scam Artist Targets The Elderly |

Cops say Maria Gomez is a scam artist who bilked trusting senior citizens out of thousands of dollars.
According to police, Gomez is part of a crew that runs a "Latin Lotto" scam that targets the elderly because they are more trusting and less likely to detect something fishy. Here's how the "Latin Lotto" crew makes its money:
A member of the group approaches an elderly person, and pretends to have a winning lottery ticket. The scammer tells their victim they can't claim their winnings because they're in the country illegally. Promising to repay their victim plus give them a portion of their winnings once collected, the scammer then asks the victim to withdraw the winnings from their bank account. As soon as the scammer has the money, however, they flee. |

Police say Maria Gomez is one of three suspects who participated in these "Latin Lotto" scams in 2003. One elderly mark was relieved of $24,000 by the scammers. Police in Wheaton, Ill. were able to identify Gomez as a suspect after comparing her fingerprints to those recovered from a crime scene. The victim confirmed Gomez's involvement by pointing out the scammer's photograph.
According to authorities, once they found out who Gomez was, they realized she had already been arrested for the same crime in Hialeah, Fla.
Police were able to catch up with her in May 2002 when she was using the alias, "Maria Lucia Hernandez-Suarez." She is now on the run, and has an active warrant for her arrest in Wheaton. |
