Anything For Love |
|
| |
Kimberly Mitchell must have really loved her boyfriend Martin Shane Moon. That's because Clarke County Sheriff's deputies say she went to great lengths to try to bust him out of an Iowa jail while he was on trial for murder in June of 2000. |

From Tennessee To Iowa |
|
| |
Mitchell was living in Tennessee in 1999 when her boyfriend Moon was arrested for an Iowa murder that had occurred nine years earlier. He was extradited back to Iowa and she stayed in Tennessee. But, police say she was determined to get her man back.
Investigators say that in June of 2000, in the midst of Moon's murder trial, Mitchell sent him a care package to the Clarke County jail. The historic jail held just eight beds and was in the courthouse where Moon was on trial.
Mitchell's address was familiar to deputies guarding the jail, because she had sent several packages over the previous year to Moon, along with pictures of herself in various states of undress.
At first, the package that arrived on June 5, 2000 didn't stand out from the rest of her "presents." This package had underwear, books, a toothbrush and a pair of flip flops. The flip flops caught the attention of Clarke County deputies, but when they examined them closer, they just seemed to be a typical, cheap pair of black rubber sandals.
But, cops say they weren't. They say Mitchell had separated the bottom layers of the rubber soles, hollowed them out and hidden hack saw blades and $300 cash inside of them. |

Escape Attempt And Escape Success |
|
| |
Deputies caught Moon in the act. They say he had nearly sawed completely through the locking part of his jail cell door.
When investigators searched his cell, they found the hollowed out flip flops, and the remains of the care package from Mitchell.
Moon was convicted of murder by a jury as his girlfriend was being picked up and arrested on assisting escape charges in Hamilton County, Tennessee.
Mitchell bonded out of jail and never appeared for her court hearings. She has been a fugitive since 2000.
Moon was sentenced to life in prison, and was serving his time at the Fort Madison State Penitentiary in Iowa. Cops say he attempted escape again on November 14th, 2005. Cops say, along with an accomplice, Robert Legendre, Moon used a makeshift grappling hook to scale the unwatched west wall of Fort Madison. This time the escape worked. Three days later, Illinois cops picked up Moon. They say he was arrested without incident in Chester. Now, cops are on a desperate search for Legendre, a convicted kidnapper.
Police had hoped that when they found Moon, they would have found Mitchell. Since Moon was alone when he was arrested, cops say Mitchell could be anywhere and they say she has a five-year head start. |
