A Killer And A Kidnapper On The Run |
|
| |
The manhunt is on for two prison lifers who allegedly escaped from the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison.
On Monday, November 14, 2005, 34-year-old Martin Shane Moon and 27-year-old Robert Joseph Legendre fled the maximum-security penitentiary. According to officials, the men were last seen at 7:00 p.m. and were reported missing at 8:40 p.m.
Police say the inmates were working for Iowa State Industries in the prison when they escaped. According to reports, the inmates used a rope and scaled the prison's limestone walls. The escape apparently occurred on the west side of the prison, which meant the escapees would have had a short walk to Highway 61, which is a direct route into Illinois.
The prison yard was not supposed to be occupied at the time of the escape, so there were no guards in the tower that faced the wall the two allegedly scaled. |

The Crimes They Committed |
|
| |
Moon was serving a life sentence at the time of the escape. He had been at the facility since a July 2000 conviction of first degree murder. He shot a man to death in 1990, apparently after an argument over drugs. Cops say this was not his first attempt at escape. While Moon was being held at the Clarke County (IA) jail during his murder, Clarke County deputies foiled his plans to flee after his girlfriend, Kimberly Mitchell, allegedly smuggled in hacksaw blades to Moon via a care package. She is still wanted for that crime.
Legendre was convicted in Nevada of attempted murder and then transferred to Iowa State Penitentiary to serve a life sentence for kidnapping, a weapons offense, and the attempted homicide. |
