  Case Story
  An Unlucky Night
Tanya White says her mother, Nina, was a loving grandma who lived an unassuming life in a quiet Phoenix suburb. On August 26, 2004, the 53-year-old had just returned home from a night out at the Talking Stick--a local casino. But she would never even make it back inside her house early that summer morning. When she pulled into her driveway from being out earlier that evening someone must have followed her into her neighborhood. She was preparing to get out of her vehicle when they surprised her at the car door. Nina had gotten lucky that night--hitting it big at two different slot machines. She must have left the Talking Stick without a care, and once she arrived at her home on East Karen Drive around 4:30 a.m., parked in the usual spot in her driveway. But before she could step out of the car, an unknown attacker shot her numerous times through the driver's side window. She died in her car, and her bullet-ridden body was discovered at 5:30 a.m., about an hour after neighbors reported the sound of gunshots. Seconds after Nina's neighbors heard the shots, they also heard a car peel out of the neighborhood. In fact, some residents reported hearing two cars speeding through the normally quiet community. Police are focusing, in particular, on a gray 4-door sedan that may have allowed the shooters to escape. Killed For Mere Trinkets They did take her purse and a bag she used for work. They took the little jewelry that she did have on--a watch, necklace, and rings off of her. That was all they did take, nothing from the house that we noticed or anything else from the vehicle that we could tell. Apart from her casino winnings, Nina White was killed for mere trinkets. The assailants took her purse and some jewelry, but nothing from her house or vehicle. That she was ambushed and robbed for so little has brought the White family immeasurable grief and confusion. The attack has also frightened a community unaccustomed to such violence, and now police are wondering if the killer has stalked other casino patrons.

Many Lingering Questions--But A Few Clues
There are no witnesses that we know of. No suspects. It seems as though the investigation is coming to a dead end. So I ask you for your help, and in publishing this story on the Internet, maybe, just maybe, someone will read this, have some information, and be willing to come forward. There are still many lingering questions: Could Nina have been followed from the casino? Might the killer have known she had casino winnings? Could the killer have even spoken with or known Nina White? Could there have been a motive beyond robbery? Yet despite these questions, there are three pieces of evidence--however small-- that may help shed some light on this case: First, the perpetrator used a high-caliber handgun to kill Nina White. Second, police do not believe the killer acted alone. They think at least one accomplice waited in a car about a block away while the murder was being committed. They also say the criminals likely fled together right after the murder. Finally, the shooter or an accomplice might have somehow been hurt in the incident, since blood other than Nina White's was found near the scene. While police can only speculate about how the shooter was injured, matching the blood-evidence with this person could help put a killer behind bars.

  A Possible Suspect
Police say one suspect is a male of unknown age, with a thin build, just under 6 feet tall. The suspect was allegedly wearing dark pants, a white T-shirt and may have been a passenger in the mysterious gray vehicle. Nina White's killer is still at-large. So far, no witnesses have come forward in the case. But Tanya and the White family continue to pray that someone has decided to provide further information.
