Cell Phone Bandit's Identity Uncovered |
|
| |
Cell phone etiquette has never been so nonexistent. Cops say a young woman has robbed four Wachovia bank branches in Northern Virginia -- all while chatting on her cell phone.
Previously dubbed the "cell phone bandit," cops have now identified her as 19-year-old Candice Rose Martinez. A few vigiliant AMW viewers recognized the bandit as Martinez and called the hotline. Police say now that they know her name, warrants for her arrest have been issued. Cops are hoping they find the cell phone bandit before she strikes again.
According to police, Martinez, committed her first robbery at a bank in Vienna on October 12, 2005. Police say Martinez walked into the bank talking on her cell phone and carrying a shoe-box sized box. According to police, she walked up to the teller counter and showed them the box, which had a note on it demanding money.
The cell phone bandit reportedly continued her phone conversation throughout the entire robbery. The other robberies were nearly identical -- except the last. Police say in Martinez's latest strike, she opened her purse to reveal a gun to the teller, never stopping the conversation in which she was seemingly immersed.

Police say in Martinez's latest strike, she opened her purse to reveal a gun to the teller, never stopping the conversation in which she was seemingly immersed.
Police believe Martinez was possibly chatting with a lookout, or someone else who knows she's robbing banks. But they also say it's entirely possible she was simply having a few normal cell phone chats during her alleged robberies.
Bank tellers who came face to face with the bandit say they weren't able to make out what her conversations were about -- and that she was mostly saying "okay." |
