Case Story |

A Christmas Murder |
|
| |
Friends say that Russ Douglas was a friendly, outgoing guy and a dedicated employee. However, cops tell AMW that his marriage was in trouble which resulted in Russ moving into his own apartment in 2003. Yet, cops say Douglas spent Christmas 2003 with his estranged wife, Brenna, and his family on Whidbey Island, Wash.
On December 26, 2003, police say that Douglas was lured to a remote location on the island by James Huden and his mistress, Peggy Sue Thomas. Russ knew Thomas through his wife, Brenna -- the two women were hairdressers and friends.
Cops believe that Huden shot Russ with a single bullet to the head and think that Peggy Thomas may have been directly involved as well. Brenna Douglas, who stood to gain over $500,000 in life insurance payments as Russ' beneficiary, remains a person-of-interest to police. |

Confessions Of A Killer |

Cops say that the same day that Russ Douglas was shot, James Huden and Peggy Thomas left Whidbey Island for their home in Henderson, Nevada. The pair drove Peggy's 1992 dark green 4-door Lexus LS400 with the Nevada vanity plates "FIRY RED" -- a self-styled moniker to match the tall, redhead's personality.
Upon returning to Nevada, police learned that Huden gave the murder weapon to Keith Ogden, an acquaintance who had initially shown Huden how to use the gun. Ballistic tests later confirmed this gun as the weapon used in Russ' murder.
A short time after giving the gun to Ogden, Huden left Peggy to return to his wife, Jean Huden, in Punta Gorda, Florida. While there, cops say Huden met up with fellow musician and old friend, Bill Hill, and confessed to him that he had killed a guy in Wash. that he didn't even know.
Authorities say that Huden told Hill that Peggy Thomas helped him carry out the murder and that the victim's wife, Brenna was also involved. Hill didn't believe what his friend was telling him, but when he contacted police in July of 2004, he learned that Huden was a wanted man.
However, according to Gerry Werksman, Peggy Thomas' attorney, his client has "cooperated fully with the investigation" even going so far as to "volunteer DNA." Werksman maintains his clients' innocence stating that these "are hardly the acts of a guilty person." |

Police questioned Huden days after Hill called them, but lacked enough hard evidence to extradite him from Florida at the time. As Hurricane Charley bore down on the Punta Gorda area, investigators left. By the time they could return, Huden had vanished.
Cops believe that James Huden may be hiding around Cabo San Lucas, Mexico or another resort community south of the border. Huden is a competent guitarist, having played professionally for years. He may be playing or hanging out in bars and nightclubs where there is live music. |
