Case Story |

Caught On Tape |
|
| |
On July 4, 1999 a Meijer department store in Sylvania, Ohio was held up by a man wearing a wig, fake glasses, and a Cincinnati Reds hat. Despite having a handful of witnesses, police also had some more crucial information -- surveillance video.
The video from this robbery showed the left-handed thief going to the back room of the store and taking a bag of money. After the robbery, he went to his white Altima, which was parked near the front of the store.
After reviewing the video, police realized they were looking for the same person who had hit another Meijer store a few months earlier -- this time in Toledo, Ohio during Easter weekend. This same thief had also robbed a Ft. Wayne, Ind. right before Christmas in 1999.
All this information was enough to let cops know that their fugitive had an M.O.

He Knew The Meijer Lingo |

Not only did he wear the same disguise in each robbery, the thief also seemed to know his way around the stores' managerial areas, knew where to park for a quick getaway, and struck during busy holiday times when employees were preoccupied.
Police say even the robberies looked like inside jobs and that the thief knew exactly what to say to gain entry into the stores' back rooms, but they still didn't have any current or former employees as suspects.
That's until we aired the story in November 2000 and the tips started pouring in. |

Closing In On A Thief |
|
| |
Working off of one of our tips, investigators believed they'd found their thief. Thomas Hansen had worked as a manager at Meijer for 17 years and police say his extensive work experience helped facilitate the robberies. Police didn't have enough to charge Hansen with anything, so they set up a surveillance on his house in December 2000.
Ironically, their big moment came when they say Hansen was returning home after his latest robbery at a South Bend, Ind. Miejer on Dec. 16, 2000. |
