  Case Story
  An Escape And A Carjacking
According to police, two guards were transporting Leobardo Villarreal to the McAllen Medical Center in Texas when he overpowered them and escaped on September 30, 2005. Villarreal was incarcerated at La Villa Federal Prison but was being transported for medical treatment after cutting his forearm. Once he arrived at the medical center, officials say Villarreal asked to use the bathroom and while unrestrained, overpowered the guards and escaped. Police say he then ran across a main road and carjacked a woman and her two children. According to officials, Villarreal forced the woman to drive him to the Mission area where he jumped out of the car wearing only boxer shorts and a pair of socks. Cops have notified customs authorities, who have set up a checkpoint to monitor traffic leaving the U.S.

  Villarreal Shoots A Federal Agent
Months earlier in May 2005,  police say Villarreal and two others tried to kill an undercover Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. A Texas grand jury handed down a four-count indictment on September 27, 2005 charging the three men with attempted murder, conspiracy to possess and distribute marijuana, use of a firearm and drug trafficking. They were trying to smuggle 700 pounds of marijuana into the United States from Mexico.
