Friendly Night Of Cards Turns Violent |
|
| |
It was Saturday night September 17, 2005 and 9 year-old Kevin Whitfield was excited to visit his Aunt and Uncle. Kevin lived in Harlem, and always looked forward to the cross-town trip to the Bronx to see Uncle Stewart and Aunt Rose. When Kevin arrived that evening, Rose was in a friend's apartment with a group of women playing cards. When the card game wrapped up, Aunt Rose, her two children and Kevin were headed back to her apartment. All of a sudden, right around midnight, five gunshots rang out in the hallway.
Uncle Stewart immediately pushed Kevin into the apartment and jumped on top of him to try and protect him from the gunfire. Once the shots stopped, Stewart noticed the little boy was bleeding from his head. Stewart thought that Kevin hit his head on an end table during all of the commotion. Stewart called Kevin's mother and she asked him to bring Kevin home right away.
When Kevin arrived home, his mother thought the cut looked very deep and took him to Harlem hospital. Doctors looked at the cut on Kevin's head and wanted to get it X-rayed. But, because of the bleeding, doctors decided instead to sew up Kevin's head first. Doctors stitched Kevin up, and he went to sleep. |

Wound Was Much More Than A Cut |
|

The next morning, Kevin was in good spirits and doctor's took an X-Ray of his head. It turns out, they found a complete bullet lodged in his head, in-between his skull and his brain. For 10 hours, Kevin had a copper-jacketed 9 millimeter bullet lodged in his head. What's more--no one--not even Kevin--knew it. Doctors called police and that's when Detective Mark Martin from the New York Police Department rushed to the hospital.
Detective Martin took the bullet as evidence and questioned the boy. The detective had seen a lot of shootings in the Bronx, but nothing touched him like Kevin's case. Detective Martin canvassed what was now a crime scene and he found the other 4 rounds fired the night before. Now, he had evidence; he just needed a suspect.
That's where you come in. Kevin is in good spirits and mostly recovered. But, whoever fired the shots is still running free. Detective Martin and Kevin's family are hoping someone knows what happened on that warm September evening. |
