  Case Story
My Story -- By Deronia James
My name is Deronia Lynn James and I am a resident of Portland, OR. My nephew, Tyrone James, 26, and his wife, Asia Renee Bell-James, 25, were victims of a fatal shooting. The shooting took Asia's life and left Tyrone blind. It has been so very hard on the children. They miss their mother. Email My Story To A Friend Family Fights TogetherIt was a senseless act of violence if ever there was one. A young couple, out on their front porch celebrating a birthday and chilling on an autumn evening. Out of the darkness, bullets flew. Within minutes, 24-year-old Asia Bell-James was dead. Her husband, Tyrone James was blinded. At first Tyrone wanted to give up, but he had three remarkable women in his life who wouldn't let him surrender to a gunman's dictates. His mother, Denise James, his aunt Deronia James, and Asia's mother, Perlia Bell encouraged him to fight. First, he fought to survive. Then he fought to thrive with his five chidren. Now he's fighting to find justice.

Young Couple Reaching for Greater Heights
As a young couple in Portland, Ore., Tyrone James and his wife, Asia Bell-James always sought to bring greater comfort and security to their lives and the lives of their five young children. Inseparable and completely devoted to each other, they strived to be the best providers they could be, both starting careers in the health care industry. Asia earned an associate degree in medical accounting, and worked as a biller for Legacy Health Systems at Good Samaritan, while Tyrone was a building maintenance engineer at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital. In September 2002, with their youngest child only 9 months old, Asia and Tyrone moved into a new home on North Mississippi Ave. in the Humboldt neighborhood of North Portland, enticed by a more affordable rent. Although the neighborhood was up and coming, it still held a stigma of violence and of gang and drug activity. Disaster StrikesTwo months later, on November 20, 2002 disaster would strike. It was Tyrone's 26th birthday. Early that evening, Tyrone and Asia were sitting on the front porch of their new home with a friend, while the couple's five children were inside. A volley of gunshots broke the peaceful evening and the porch was suddenly filled with the color of blood. All three were hit. Asia died almost immediately. Their friend, Robert Milhouse was wounded but not seriously injured. Tyrone, on the other hand, was shot in the face, a single bullet causing enough damage to both eyes to leave him legally blind. Tyrone, the hard-working and constant provider was now left in darkness and without his wife to take care of their five young children.

Crime Without Motive Has Gone Unpunished
Asia's murder is a featured case for Portland's cold-case unit, and police now believe that they have four suspects in custody. In the days before Asia's murder there was a rash of shootings in the Homboldt neighborhood. They were all tied to drug connections or gang rivalry -- several victims were members of Rolling 60 Crips. But police say Asia and Tyrone had no gang or drug connections. According to reports, either one or two shooters emerged from the darkness that night and targeted the trio on the porch; at least a dozen shots were fired. So was it a case of mistaken idenity? Did the shooters believe that Asia and Tyrone were somehow a threat? It is now almost three years later, and the community is still devastated by the shootings.  Annually, on September 11, a neighborhood march is held in remembrance of Asia Bell and other victims. Crowds mark the occasion with readings and music so that the community does not forget the senseless violence that took away the innocent life of Asia Bell. Her family still prays for justice, and fights to raise the five children in a world with less violence.
