Cops: Woman Guns Down Tennessee Guard, Helps Husband Escape |
|
| |
Tennessee officials are on the manhunt for an escaped inmate and his wife who allegedly helped him make the daring getaway. George Hyatte made a court appearance at the Roane County Courthouse August 9th, 2005, concerning a 2002 robbery. Cops say Hyatte's wife Jennifer pulled up in the parking lot and opened fire on the prison official who was escorting her husband from the courthouse to the prison van after the court appearance. Officials say Jennifer Hyatte checked into a local Kingston motel under a different name and had been in the courtroom for her husband's hearing early Tuesday morning. Then, cops say, she waited for her husband to be walked to the prison van before pulling the trigger.
According to officials, Jennifer Hyatte shot corrections officer Wayne Morgan three times with a handgun in the parking lot of the courthouse, freeing her husband. Cops say when George Hyatte saw his wife in the parking lot, he yelled, "Shoot 'Em!" Then, the pair allegedly took off in a blue Ford Explorer.
Cops say the Explorer was recovered at a nearby restaurant, with a bullet hole in one of the windows. Cops say a significant amount of blood was on the driver's side of the vehicle, leading officials to believe Jennifer may have been hit in the returned fire. Authorities were searching for the two and a gold Chevy Venture that they were thought to have been traveling in. Now, there are reports that the vehicle has been located in Kentucky and authorities are on the scene.

'Bonnie and Clyde' Pair Have Troubled Past |

Records show George Hyatte has a lengthy criminal record, dating back to the mid-1980s. Officials say Hyatte has tried to escape at least five other times. In 2002, he and another prisoner overpowered two Rhea County jailers using a makeshift knife fashioned from two toothbrushes and a razor blade. But, Hyatte was picked up in Florida two days later at a DUI checkpoint.
Jennifer and George Hyatte met while he was serving time for a prior conviction. Jennifer is a former prison nurse who was fired from her contract job at Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville in 2004 because, cops say, of her relationship with George Hyatte. |
