Surprise Attack On Pregnant Mom |

In September 2004, a pregnant mother fell asleep on the family room couch while watching television with her 14-month-old daughter in rural Ledbetter, Ky. Their peaceful slumber didn't last long though...
Late that evening, the victim awoke to sharp stabbing pains in her abdomen. The young wife and mother was in her third trimester. She felt someone looking at her and awoke to a man in head-to-toe camouflage standing over her and her daughter.
He was armed with a stun gun, and aimed it all over the woman's body. The current passed through her body and caused a brief incapacitation, but the victim's overwhelming desire to defend her children gave her the strength to fight the intruder.
The pair wrestled and the attacker eventually lost the stun gun. The victim regained her composure and sat on the couch, cradling her infant. She tasted blood, and worried about the well-being of the baby she was carrying.
As the victim sat on the couch, the now unarmed attacker sat across from her in a chair. Despite the young mother's many attempts to engage him in conversation, the intruder wouldn't speak. He would nod and mime in response to her, but never uttered a single word.
Anxious about the welfare of her unborn child and infant daughter, the woman did everything she could to get rid of the masked man. She told police she offered him money, jewelry, and her car--anything to get rid of him. But he wouldn't budge. Then the woman watched as he got up, reached into her husband's gun cabinet, grabbed a loaded shotgun and pointed it at his victims.
The woman continued to offer the attacker everything she could think of, but he just shook his head "no" or mimed that he wasn't interested. |

At her wit's end, the woman offered the intruder one last thing: herself. Finally, he nodded "yes."
The masked man forced his victim into her bedroom at gunpoint as she held her daughter in her arms. Then, while her infant daughter slept on the bed, the assailant raped the woman.
Thinking only of survival and her children's safety, the young mother complied with the brutal attack, all the while, carefully gathering clues about the masked man. During the rape, he removed one of his gloves, and the woman was able to see his skin. She described it to police as that of a man who is either Hispanic or a light-skinned African-American. She also stared at his eyes--the only thing visible in his camouflage get-up. She recognized them, and feared she knew the silent man.
After the rape, the attacker left his victim and her daughter alone in the bedroom. Twenty minutes later, the woman realized her attacker was gone and she bolted out of her home.
Neighbors next door called police and the woman walked law enforcement through the harrowing attack. Then, she quickly went to the hospital's neo-natal unit to check on her unborn child. Fortunately, she and her children all survived with only minimal wounds.
Police now had a brutal rape to solve and they feared the woman's attacker knew her. The fact that he never said a word led police to believe that he had likely been worried she would recognize his voice. Also, there was no sign of forced entry and the woman was certain she had locked all the doors before falling asleep. The detective asked her if anyone in her life matched the attacker's size and skin tone. That's when she put it all together. |

When Livingston County Sheriff's deputies told the woman to think if anyone could do this, her mind started to race. She says that the man who attacked her resembled her co-worker, Jose Garcia. Garcia had worked with the woman for about two years in a small shop and office in nearby Paducah. The woman thought he was the same height and build as her unidentified rapist, and she thought her rapist's skin tone matched Garcia's.
At work, Garcia and the woman were often the only two people in the shop while their colleagues were off on service calls. She says that he always seemed to pay special attention to her and in hindsight, she reflected on what now seemed like suspicious behavior.
Four months before her attack, someone had put a peephole in the co-ed bathroom of the woman's office. Her boss filled the hole as soon as she mentioned it to him, but it was later reopened. On that day, the woman says there were only three people in the office: her boss, Jose and herself. The boss pulled Garcia aside and spoke to him about the spy hole, which remained covered after that.
Two months after that incident, the woman lost her keys at work; they seemed to just vanish from her purse. Again, Jose Garcia was the only other person at work that day. As the woman started to recount these incidents, the link to Garcia seemed more and more plausible.
The morning after the rape, police went to their workplace to question Garcia about the attack. When they got there, cops say he seemed nervous, and when they asked him to come down to the station, he reluctantly agreed. Detectives say Garcia was helpful until they asked for a DNA sample, then he invoked his right to a lawyer. Armed with a warrant, detectives got a sample of Garcia's saliva, but by the time the test came back as a positive hit, Garcia was already on the run.
Police say that without the victim's cooperation, they never could have identified a suspect. Yet, even though she did everything right as a victim-witness, she's still waiting for justice. She and law enforcement want Garcia back in Kentucky to face the charges. Cops think he may be driving a blue 1991 Honda with Illinois or Kentucky plates. |
