  Case Story
  Robbers on the Run
During the early morning hours of July 22, 2005 at the Lexington County Detention Center in South Carolina, jailors proceeded to do the same thing they do every morning -- take a head count. But things didn't go as usual. Workers at the jail soon learned that three prisoners were missing -- Ted Evan Doughty, Daniel Pilson and Clifton Sentel Porterfield. Cops say Doughty and Pilson have a fierce criminal history. Investigators say the pair are wanted for various crimes including car theft, bank robbery and kidnapping. In fact, Doughty and Pilson were convicted of bank robbery and were waiting for sentencing. And police also say Porterfield is no angel. He faces mulitple charges including assault and kidnapping. Despite their troubled pasts, the trio managed to escape from the maximum security wing at the detention center and police are trying to figure out if someone helped the men break away. Police say they're not sure what time the escape happened but believe it may have been at some point Friday evening. That's because someone stole a red Eagle Talon Friday evening not far from the jail. U.S. Marshal's later found Porterfield driving the car just outside Atlanta, Georgia and apprehended him.

  And Then There Were Two
Now police are intensifying the search for Pilson and Doughty -- they say the men were allegedly up to their old tricks and had been making plans to rob another bank and possibly kidnap another person. And the pair haven't done much of a job of keeping a low profile. Police say the men are constantly switching getaway cars. They allegedly started out in a white Dodge Intrepid, then may have switched to a red Toyota extended cab. For a short period, the men were behind the wheel of a light blue or silver 2005 Honda Civic, but that car turned up in Chesapeake. Police say the men are now behind the wheel of yet another vehicle. But this time they chose a more flashy set of wheels. The pair are allegedly cruising a Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible.

Police Encounter Suspects And A Shoot Out
Investigators also say the boys are having a hard time living by the law, now that they're out of jail. The Washington County Sheriff's office in Virginia says that on July 27, 2005 Det. Jesse Kennedy spotted  the men sitting in a vehicle and that one of them was wearing  a ski mask. Considering the 90 degree temperature, police say Kennedy thought the face gear was an unusual choice for such a hot summer day. Cops say Kennedy pulled up to the car to investigate and next thing he knew, the car took off. After he chased the vehicle, he temporarily lost sight of it. But after continuing down the road, he spotted the car again. Police say one of the suspects got out of the car and Kennedy did the same. As Kennedy walked toward the car, one of the men allegedly fired at Kennedy. Luckily, he missed the detective, who then shot back. Det. Kennedy is recovering from minor injuries he received from glass that shattered when the suspect fired shots. And police are still on the lookout for the pair of escapees.
