  Case Story
  A Mother's Wisdom
Delores Bernstein made it a point to talk to her two sons about the dangers of guns. She thought the talks would keep them out of harm's way. Unfortunately, after losing her second son, Delores realized that tragically, danger can sometimes not be avoided. Kente Jones, 24, from San Leandro, Calif. decided to go to Quart House Liquors in nearby Hayward after receiving his paycheck. He grew up in Hayward, and it was not uncommon for Kente to go back to his old neighborhood and visit friends. Around 9:30pm Kente walked in to the store and asked the clerk if he could break a $100 bill. The cashier told Kente to come back later. Cops say seconds later, Kente was accosted while getting into his red Lexus by an unidentified man. When Kente tried to fight off his attacker, he was shot.

  Robbery
Kente stumbled into the liquor store and asked the owner to call 911 and then collapsed in front of the counter. After being taken to Eden Medical Center, he was pronounced dead from "a gunshot wound or wounds to the upper body." Cops believe the motive for the shooting was money. Kente had around $300 when he went into the store, but was penniless after the confrontation. The attacker was seen by witnesses getting into a light colored hatchback with at least two other people and speeding off.

  Two Sons
This was not the first time violence invaded the life of Delores Bernstein. On January 29, 1994 her oldest son Arthur Wright died after being shot in his home in Oakland. "I spent all their lives teaching my sons that guns are no good. Now both of my sons have died from guns, what are the odds of both of your children being murdered?," Delores said in an interview with a local reporter. According to friends, Kente Jones was a hardworking, ambitious young man who was preparing to enroll into college. His girlfriend of two years, Antonia Malhi shared her memories with a local newspaper, "We had so many plans... he wanted to do so much with his life. He was so funny, so different."
