  Case Story
Police In Georgia Seek Suspected Child Killer
Police in Gainesville, GA believe twenty-four-year-old Cornelio Rivera Zamites molested and killed 4-year-old Esmerelda Nava.  Esmerelda was found Sunday, June 26, 2005 in a wooded area behind a mobile home on Pratt Reece Road, not far from Zamites' trailer. Zamites is being sought on charges of murder, kidnapping and child molestation.  He goes by the nickname "Revolver."  Esmerelda was last seen around 11:45 p.m. Saturday night.  About 15 minutes later her mother realized the girl was missing.  Authorities arrived within 15 minytes of the 911 call and conducted a search which ended about six hours later when the body was found. Friends say the young girl went missing while her parents were visiting with Zamites on Saturday evening.

  Multi-Agency Search Gets Underway
On Sunday, the manhunt for Zamites included the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Georgia State Patrol and search dogs from Lee Arrendale State Prison and Immigration and Naturalization Services. Authorities also stopped vehicles at area roadblocks, Hall County sheriff's Capt. Jeff Strickland said. At a news conference Monday morning, Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic said one man was picked up and questioned Sunday night by authorities after it was believed he may have helped Cornelio Rivera Zamites of Gainesville elude police. "We picked up a Jose del Gato in a red Chevrolet we were on the lookout for at around 10 p.m. and he did not give us any information on Zamites' whereabouts," Cronic said. "In fact, del Gato gave us false information and is charged with that as well as an immigration hold on him at this time."

  Troubling Head Start
Cronic said they realize that Zamites already had a six-hour head start on police."We've had some leads we're pursuing, but of course, it is possible that he has already left the area and maybe even the country. But we're going to do everything we can to catch this guy," he said."He is a Hispanic male, 24 years of age. That's all I have right now," Hall County Sheriff's Capt. Strickland said."Why would anyone want to do this time to a four-year-old little girl?" Cronic said. "He's an animal. That's all you can say."
