  Case Story
  Raised Right
From the day she brought her grandson Cecil home from the hospital, Phyllis Lopes had only one goal for the child she would be raising -- rearing him into a polite, sensitive, and successful man. She taught him to constantly question his surroundings and to never give up. Because of this, Cecil grew into a quiet but inquisitive young man whose motto was, "nothing beats a failure but a try." Cecil lived by that motto -- until his life was brutally torn from him on Halloween 2004. Now, Phyllis' only goal is to find justice for Cecil by finding the monster who took his life.

  Halloween Horror
In the early evening hours of October 31, 2004, Cecil came home for a visit from University of Massachussets at Dartmouth looking for some grub. Phyllis says Cecil couldn't stand the cafeteria food at school, and was looking for a home-cooked meal. His choice was chicken. Happy to oblige, Phyllis got to work in the kitchen. Darkness was falling, and the neighborhood kids, dressed as ghouls, ghosts, and everything in between were out trick-or-treating. As she cooked, Phyllis heard Cecil dribbling a basketball and opening the door. Phyllis asked where he was going -- but she already knew. Cecil was going down the street to give his basketball to a young boy who didn't have enough money to buy one of his own. Though Phyllis had bought the basketball for Cecil, she knew she'd have little luck convincing Cecil to keep it -- the man she raised was far too generous to keep something others truly needed. Cecil said he'd be right back. Phyllis finished cooking the chicken dinner, but Cecil still hadn't returned. Neighborhood kids were coming and going, ringing the doorbell every few minutes. Phyllis wanted to send Cecil back to his dorm with some candy, so when the doorbell rang again, she decided it would be the last trick-or-treater she'd answer. As she was about to answer the door, Phyllis heard two loud bangs outside. Dismissing them as nothing more than the sounds of kids setting off firecrackers, Phyllis went onto her porch to turn off the lights to deter kids from coming to the door. As she stood outside, Phyllis looked up into the sky and saw blue lights flashing. At first, she didn't connect them with the loud bangs. But soon, she learned the horrible news that someone had been shot and killed right down the street. But worse news came shortly after that. The person who had been murdered was her beloved Cecil.

  A Killer On The Loose
Cecil had one gunshot wound to the head, though people police interviewed after the murder said they heard up to five gunshots around the time of his murder. He died on the scene. Cops believe Cecil's drive-by murder was gang related. They've conducted numerous interviews with people who were out on the streets that night, hoping someone will come forward as a witness. So far, no one has -- and Cecil's murder remains unsolved. Phyllis wasn't the only person who lost something when Cecil died. According to Phyllis, on the day of Cecil's funeral, the church was so packed that many had to stand outside. Phyllis says Cecil is in a better place now -- but she won't rest until her beloved Cecil's killer is brought to justice.
