Two Siblings Go Missing From Homicide Scene |
|
| |
Authorities were called around 6:15 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2005 by a neighbor who reported "suspicious circumstances" at a house about eight miles from town and just off Interstate 90 on Wolf Lodge Bay, an arm of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said.
Police identified the slain bodies as the mother of the two missing children, Brenda Groene, another as an older sibling, 13-year-old Slade Groene, and the third as 37-year-old Mark McKenzie, Brenda's boyfriend.
The bodies bore obvious signs of injury, but the cause of death remained undetermined and deputies sealed the house without further action to determine the cause of death or identities until they could get a search warrant, Wolfinger said.
"They're treating it as an obvious homicide," Wolfinger said at the time.
An AMBER Alert was issued for Shasta Groene and her 9-year-old brother, Dylan Groene. Both children lived at the house with their mother, McDonald said. |

Authorities Announce $100K Reward |
|
| |
Hoping to generate new leads in the case, authorities announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to the children's safe return or for information that could lead to those responsible in their presumed abduction.
"What we're trying to do is generate information which will help us continue our investigation," FBI special agent Tim Fuhrman told reporters. "This is just another tool in our bag to generate that information and give us what we hope is a happy resolution to this particular situation." |

Shasta Recovered, Convicted Sex Offender Pleads Guilty |
|

Kootenai County Sheriff's Captain Ben Wolfinger also said there's no evidence linking the children's father, Steve Groene, to the crime or making him a person of interest.
Wolfinger told reporters a polygraph "measures the physiological response" of the subject.
"This man is extremely emotional, and very understandably so," he said.
AMW aired the story on May 22, 2005.
Shasta Groene was recovered, but her brother Dylan had been murdered.
In late 2007, convicted sex offender Joseph Duncan pled guilty to the crimes, including some which carry a possible death penalty.
In disturbing recorded testimony played at his sentencing hearing in August 2008, Shasta spoke in her own words about the abduction and her life after being kidnapped. Authorities said that both Shasta and Dylan were repeatedly molested, and Shasta watched as Duncan murdered Dylan and set his body on fire. |
