  Case Story
  Triple Murder in Idaho
On Monday May 16, three people were found dead at a home located southeast of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. Police say it was an "obvious" triple homicide. Police identified the bodies as Brenda Groene, the mother, 13-year-old Slade Groene, a sibling, and 37-year-old Mark McKenzie, Brenda Groene's fiance. Authorities were called at 6:15 p.m. May 16, 2005 by a neighbor who reported "suspicious circumstances" at the house, Capt. Ben Wolfinger said. County coroner Dr. Robert West said the victims were bludgeoned to death. He would not say when they died or what weapon was used.  The two youngest children, Shasta and Dylan, were reported missing. Saturday, July 2, authorities received a call about a possible sighting of Shasta Groene. To their relief, the little girl seen in a Denny's restaurant was the missing eight-year-old. Shasta has been reunited with her father and is resting comfortably. Officers arrested the man, Joseph Edward Duncan, 42, on suspicion of kidnapping and other charges. Duncan, from Fargo, N.D., is a violent sexual predator who has spent much of his adult life in prison. Authorities fear, nine-year-old Dylan Groene is dead. Kootenai County Sheriff Rocky Watson said that "possible" human remains had been found at a site in western Montana, and would be sent to the FBI crime lab in Virginia for DNA analysis. That is expected to take three days. Watson declined to answer questions, but the fact that he called a press conference at the place where reporters were following the Groene story indicated officials believe the remains were related. "Unfortunately we believe Dylan to be deceased," Sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said after Watson's announcement. But until the remains are identified, they could not be certain, he said.

  Authorities Announce $100K Reward
Hoping to generate new leads in the case, authorities announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to the children's safe return or for information that could lead to those responsible in their presumed abduction. "What we're trying to do is generate information which will help us continue our investigation," FBI special agent Tim Fuhrman told reporters. "This is just another tool in our bag to generate that information and give us what we hope is a happy resolution to this particular situation." DNA Testing Shows No Traces Of Blood Of Two Missing Children Preliminary DNA tests showed no traces of the blood of two missing children in the home where three of their family members were killed. That raises hopes that Dylan and Shasta Groene may still be alive. Only the blood of the three murder victims, the missing children's mother and older brother and the mother's boyfriend was found at the scene, according to initial analysis by the FBI. Dad Not A Suspect In Case Kootenai County sheriff's Captain Ben Wolfinger also says there's no evidence linking the father, Steven Groene, to the crime or making him a person of interest.  Wolfinger told reporters a polygraph "measures the physiological response" of the subject. "This man is extremely emotional, and very understandably so," he said.

  Family History
Steven and Brenda Groene were separated in 1998 and divorced in 2001. She had custody of the three younger children and he had custody of two older children, Vance Robert, now 20, and Jesse, 18, court records show. "None of it can even begin to make sense," Vance Groene told television reporters. "They've always been taught don't talk to strangers, they never left the yard. "The only thing I really have to look forward to in this situation is a positive outcome with my brother and my sister," he added. Neighbor Janie Riley, who with her husband owns a nearby campground where the younger children often played, said she did not recall any obvious signs of trouble at the house. "But there was a lot of activity going on there," Riley said. County court records indicate the family had minor scrapes with the law, including arrests of Brenda Groene for investigation of drug possession in June 2003 and for investigation of passing bad checks; drunken driving and driving without privileges and without insurance. She once operated Maid To Order, a house-cleaning business, and was on probation for possession of drug paraphernalia at the time of her death, according to The Spokesman-Review of Spokane. She previously served time in jail and was ordered to get drug and alcohol counseling but had trouble meeting that requirement because she lacked money to pay for it, court records indicated. Jesse Groene is currently jailed for investigation of assault, battery, burglary and possession of stolen property, according to a jail employee who refused to give his name. "This is just tragedy," Jesse Groene told TV reporters by telephone from the jail. "I can't think of anybody who's twisted and evil and lunatic enough to do this."  -AP
