Charm Keeps Fugitive Ahead Of Law
Florida law enforcement officials are trying to track down a smooth-talking escaped convict. William Hawley, 41, simply walked off a work detail on Tuesday May 10, 2005 and enlisted two unwitting people to help him. According to officials, Hawley was serving a 10-year prison term for fleeing from police at a high speed, grand theft, burglary, and cocaine possession. Cops say because he was a minumum security inmate, he was able to convince the lone state corrections officer that he was sick and needed a break from his work detail. Then, officials say he took off. Cops say Hawley used the head start to change out of his blue prison uniform into a white T-shirt, steal a bicycle from a meter reader and ride into a condominium community. Hawley then allegedly conned a good-hearted Stuart senior citizen to drive him to Port St. Lucie, telling the unsuspecting woman that he was looking for his pregnant wife. After she drove him to numerous hospitals in Stuart and Fort Pierce, the unwitting woman dropped him off at a Burger King in Port St. Lucie, giving the escapee $20 to buy lunch. At the fast-food restaurant, Hawley tricked a Port St. Lucie resident into giving him a place to stay for the night. After stealing his benefactor's bicycle the next morning, cops say Hawley happened on a car in a driveway with the keys inside. The search for Hawley has gone nationwide, according to officials. Authorities are now saying he likely fled the south Florida area in a stolen car.

Smooth-Talking Salesman Still On The Loose
The convicted car thief was a salesman before spending time in prison, and cops say he's very comfortable dealing with people. His smooth-talking nature also charmed many women while he was serving time. In an ad on a inmate pen-pal Web site, Hawley asked interested women to send a letter but no photo at first because, "it's your heart that means the most to me." In the same ad, he described himself as an "extremely loyal, sensitive and passionate man." Detectives believe Hawley will continue to use his charm to con unsuspecting people in order to stay one step ahead of the law.
