Anesthesiologist Convicted of Rape Flees In Middle Of Trial |
|
| |
A wealthy Rhode Island doctor took off before the end of his trial. Now, he's been convicted of rape, and authorities are trying to track him down.
Victims say Ronald Fischer has a pock-marked face, a bad comb-over and a fiery temper. But, that's not what many women thought when they read Fischer's personal ads posted on websites and in newpapers throughout the New England area. The man self-described as "handsome, blue-eyed and loveable" is actually a rapist.
Police say Fischer started placing ads in 1992 after he got divorced. From the ads, he got a lot of dates, but cops say he wanted more in return. According to officials, Fischer preyed on intelligent women, a college professor and a newspaper photo editor among them. In 1994, Fischer was charged with meeting a woman on-line and raping her aboard his yacht, "The Lion King." But, Fischer pled guilty to lesser charges, and only got 5 years probation. |

Fischer Sends "Goodbye" E-Mail |
|
| |
In 2003, Fischer met a college English professor on-line. He took her to his yacht, "The Lion King," and wooed her with drinks and dinner. But, the romantic date soon took a dangerous turn. Fischer forced himself on the unsuspecting woman and raped her in the bedroom aboard his yacht. He was arrested, charged and his case went to trial in 2005. But, midway through the trial, Fischer sent an e-mail titled "Goodbye" to his attorney, telling him he was leaving the country, "I have...decided not to take the risk and to leave the U.S. and enjoy life in another country where I have long been carefully planning a good, safe, secure and comfortable life."
Fischer hasn't been seen or heard from since. A jury convicted him in absentia of two counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of second-degree sexual assault, meaning that the former anesthesiologist could face up to life in prison. |
