Newest Top Tenner |
|
| |
Two months after his alleged escape from the Ross County Jail, accused cop killer John Parsons has been named to the FBI's Top Ten list. Agents say that Parsons warrants the notorious distinction because of his long history of violent crimes and the danger he clearly poses to law enforcement and the community.
Safehouse Dismantled
The announcement comes on the heels of perhaps the biggest clue yet in the hunt for the accused cop killer. Deep in the woods of Chillicothe, Ohio, two fisherman headed to the Scioto River looking to catch a few catfish. But, police say, the pair almost got their hands on a much bigger fish. Authorities say the two men stumbled upon fugitive John Parsons' safehouse-- a tiny shack-- on Sept. 19, 2006. Inside the rundown home were items smartly crafted to ease the pain of living on the run. Police say they have no doubt that Parsons is the mastermind behind the handiwork they collected as evidence.
The two fishermen claim they locked eyes with the fugitive on private property near the Scioto River. They say when Parsons saw them, he ran.
The fishermen continued to root around their friend's property in hopes of scaring off the unknown trespasser. When they looked inside of the tiny metal structure and found the living quarters, they remembered about the escapee on the run and contacted police. Police have since confirmed with fingerprints that Parsons was living in the roadside shed and had even equipped it with a trap door for a quick escape.
The hideout was a far worse environment than the jail cell Parsons allegedly escaped. There was no running water or electricity in the shack. In fact, cops say Parsons had constructed a crude toilet to use as a bathroom. Police believe Parsons, who is known for being good with his hands, crafted items in the home to ease into his life on the run. Parsons allegedly made shelves to store food in the tiny metal structure. Authorities say he even stole a mattress from a neighbor's home for sleeping. Parsons was also allegedly insulating parts of the shed to prepare for the cold months ahead.
According to police, Parsons was not living alone. They found women's clothing in the shack and multiple fingerprints from other people. Authorities also say Parsons was taking care of a kitten that was seen wandering around the home.
Parsons Sightings
Since his alleged escape in July, authorities have been on the hunt for John Parsons, the man accused of killing a cop. A multi-agency task force has been following leads both locally and nationally on the case. But, after his profile on AMW, this escapee is having a hard time hiding.
First, AMW tipsters pinpointed Parsons in Columbus, Ohio. One of their tips included a sighting of Parsons on the west side of the city. The tipster said she had seen him with an alleged prostitute in the area and that he may have been dating her. Cops followed up and feel certain that Parsons had been there, but he just slipped away before they got there. Now, they're counting on new leads from AMW viewers to send them in the right direction. |

Suspected Cop Killer Escapes |
|
| |
Police in Chillicothe, Ohio arrested Parsons on May 1, 2005, and he was charged with murder. Cops say he shot and killed police officer Larry Cox. Parsons was being held on those charges at the Ross County Jail when they say he executed an elaborate, well-thought-out plan and escaped on July 29, 2006.
Police say Parsons escaped from a jail recreation area around 1 p.m. that Saturday using a rope of toilet paper and bed sheets. The sheriff says Parsons hid the makeshift rope behind a block that he had dug out of his cell wall. Deputies say Parsons removed the block using a piece of metal from a table in the cell and then would replace the block, using toothpaste to make it look like mortar. Investigators say the plan was thorough and clearly took a long time to execute.
It seems that Parsons had that kind of time because Ross County was searching for a lawyer for the accused cop killer. There is only one public defender in Ross County who can try a capital case. That attorney refused to represent Parsons, saying it would be a conflict of interest because he had known Officer Cox for more than two decades.
It was widely reported that Parsons was expected to plead guilty to Cox's murder, but the case was on hold while the judge actively sought a public defender for Parsons. |

Series Of Events Leads To Alley Murder |
|
| |
At around 8:40 pm on April 21, 2005, Chillicothe Police say a car was reported stolen from a restaurant in their jurisdiction. Just 15 minutes later, a disguised armed robber stormed in to the BP Gas Station with a gun and took cash from the register.
Investigators say the employees at the BP station gave police a description of the getaway car used in the robbery and it matched the description of the vehicle stolen earlier. At around 10 pm, a car chase between the stolen car and a Chillicothe police officer ended when the suspect bailed out of the car and took off running.
As he walked from his parent's house to his own, that's when cops say Larry Cox got word of the chase on foot. Cops say Officer Cox confronted the robber in an alley way near Chestnut and North High Streets. Cox was shot and killed in the alley.
Even though Officer Cox was off-duty, authorities consider his murder in the line of duty because he was in pursuit of an armed robber.
Officer Cox was the first Chillicothe police officer killed in the line of duty in 78 years.
Clues finally led cops to John Parsons, who they arrested May 1, 2005 and charged with the killing.
Cops are hoping tips from the public will once again lead them to John Parsons. They hope to get him back in custody before anyone else gets hurt. |
