Police Say Man Abducts Child After Shooting Grandfather |

Police say 28-year-old Almutah Saunders showed up at the home of Erika Turner and her four-month-old daughter Jada in Irvington, NJ, early Monday morning April 11. After an altercation, police say Saunders produced a .40 caliber handgun and shot Erika's father in the leg, then forced Erika and Jada into his car -- a 2001 grey or silver Honda Accord, with NJ registration RJD-75V. Saunders is the infant's father.
Cops say he has stated that he plans to commit murder or suicide. The suspect is described as a 5'11" man, weighing approximately 150 pounds, armed with a .40 caliber handgun. |

Hours after the getaway, police located the car in a neighborhood outside Philipsburg, Penn -- about 56 miles west of Irvington. It's being reported that Erika, four-month-old Jada and Almutah Saunders are inside the car.
Irvington Mayor Wayne Smith said the suspect was wanted for a prior abduction of Turner, but officers had been unable to find him at his last known address, in East Orange.
Police say Saunders was paroled in June 2002 after serving about two years in state prison for selling drugs on school property in 1999 and for three weapons offenses in 1998, according to state Corrections Department records. |
